This is now the third time this problem has happened and it's driving me nuts. I've just updated to a new P4 1.7 and a new mobo as well.. the system is freshly formatted with a copy of Win2k on.. I've installed a few standard programs(winamp/aim/IE6/etc.) and now all of a sudden my processor usage will get stuck in a cycle.. It jumps to 20% then back down to 0%.. then 20... then 0. It spikes at exact constant intervals of about 4 seconds. Any idea what could be causing this ?

You can check in Task Manager and see exactly which process is using the most CPU time.... have you checked that out yet? Are there any other problems with the computer at all now?

Yeah I had and I haven't found anything out of the ordinary. As far as other problems, nope, and the spikes haven't happened since I restarted after yesterday. It seems really random.

well something is occuping your CPU.

Next time it's "spiking" goto the task manager (CRTL-SHIFT-ESC), and click the "Processes" tab. Sort by CPU Usage.

Watch carefully and look to see what is spiking things......it's gotta be there.

Once you know what is the cuplrit you can focus your efforts....and/or let us know
