performance on 9600xt?

I was looking at getting a 9600xt, and wondering if you guys thought the performance would be acceptable on newer dx9 games like HL2, since AT didn't bench the 9600xt in the CS: Source test. For me, pretty decent would be playing something like HL2 or Far Cry on 1024*768 without the eye candy without framerates dropping below like 30.

Also, does anyone own the Sapphire radeon 9600xt, and if they do, how loud is the stock fan it comes with?

thanks a lot

I owned an ATI 9600xt and it was the biggest waste of money ever. Get a 9700 non pro or pro for the same price.

Yes, the proformance/overclockability/compatability with games. All not so good. I'll break it down for you.

9700:
8 pipelines
256bit mem bus

9600xt:
4 pipelines
128bit mem bus

Games that the 9600 will barely play on low settings, the 9700 will be powering through with medium settings.

unfortunately it seems the retailers im shopping around on don't seem to carry any kind of diversity of radeon 9700 cards anymore.

maybe i'll just go with the radeon 9800 pro. The thing is, if the radeon 9600xt can handle hl2 okay i probably don't need the extra power and thus the extra cost.

Yeah, I definenlty get the 9800Pro, I have the Sapphire 9600XT, and it works fine. But I definently would've gone with the 9800Pro if I had the money.

The 9600XT should play HL2 pretty decently ? ~ 61fps in the stress test ? techreport

Someone in a thread at Beyond3d ran the stress test on a 9600XT with 8AF and it was ~ 47fps (10x7), so the game should run well even with AF.

It all comes down to price. Check various online benchmarks in other games to give you a general idea ... on various benchies I've done, my 9800pro is about 35-60% faster than my old 9500pro (which is about the same the 9600XT) - depending on the game and setting. If you can get a 9800pro for only a slight increase in price, I'd definitely go for that.
