Well if you read my blog you can see the components that ive chosen for this build and I was curious for a better RAID controller because I know the one i picked will not be able to use the full power of 8 SSD drives in RAID 0. If anyone has a good alternative that would be wonderful.

This system is made for gaming and workstation graphics. I know that gaming cards are not the best choice for solidworks or autocad but in comparison with mid range workstation graphics I am pretty sure it will do just fine. Also for this build it was not so much workstation capabilities but an attempt to use some new technologies such as SSD's or DDR3. The Budget was 15,000 dollars and we wanted to see what we could do to fill in that void. The only thing we did not want to do was watercooling because this machine will be going to someone who will probably not want to deal with watercooling hassles such as refilling the reservoir. A mild overclock will probably be used and thats about it. If you read my blog you can see more specifics.

But if you have any suggestions on a better RAID controller that would be greatly appreciated

...why...

I don't want to rain your parade but good god man... :)

Your link is dead BTW.

I really don't know why you would go with DDR3 - it's only useful for extreme overclocking ATM - and is otherwise an obscene waste of money. Dual socket, 8 cores, and 8GB+ of FB-DIMM would be better IMO

SSDs are interesting... With $15k you'd better be driving at least one 30" LCD (why not 2+) with tri-sli GTX 280s ;) Fix the link, I'm curious...

well I went with DDR3 because me and associates wanted to see how it performed and make us laugh and giggle. We cant go for tri sli gtx 280's cause we bought the video cards before they came out and the preparation for the build started in early april and the final product list was made late may early june. I was thinking 2 30" monitors but we have some overhead and we may just buy a second one if we we feel that the money left over is enough to justify another monitor.

reading your image... type out the specs next time :)

2) You're probably making a mistake using gaming cards over Quadros. 1.5 GB of RAM per card is there for a reason :) If your client is a serious modeler / engineer, then please don't give him gaming cards. Quadros are still plenty fast for casual gaming.

3) If you still must go with gaming cards, 9800GX2 Quad-SLI is FAIL. DO NOT use it. Tri-SLI GTX 280 is the only "uber high end" solution ATM.

You're worried about the raid controller? How much bandwidth are you looking for and are you sure Intel's archtecture can support it. AMD is still king in the area of huge bandwidth needs across motherboard, unless intel has their version of HTT out yet.

That's why you never buy anything until you have a final spec ready and the cash in hand. You got generation leapfrogged :( Don't let that happen next time, and pray that your client doesn't find out. If it was me, I'd be wicked pissed.

If you're trying to run a business, than laughing and giggling will NOT get you anywhere. I think you made a poor decision.

But, I guess you've already pulled the trigger. Bummer... I hope you find a good RAID controller.

The REALLY sad thing is that you could build a PC that's 90% as fast in most tasks (and significantly faster when gaming) for about $3k

Well I think you spent to much in some areas and not enough in others. If this thing is for cad work, you do not want a shit mouse. And using SSD drives for data storage is a HUGE waste of money. At most you want the SSD drive to run your OS drive and then use SATA drives for data storage. This will save you a tone of money to dump into a better motherboard and possible a 2nd video card since you clearly stated you wanted to venture into SLI.
You seem to be trying to extend your epenis based on using a bunch of SSD drives. If you want a true performer you need to look elsewhere.

I think you missed the point. He already ordered the parts, and this is for a client, not him.

I also agree (and failed to mention) that SSD drives for data storage is fail. For OS drives they're fantastic, but 4 of them in RAID and 4 1TB drives would be a better solution as well ;)

I noticed he already ordered the parts after built this system. Now the scary part is, a friend of mine has a system damn near what I just built, minus the SSD drive.
And that SOB got the mobo, both CPU's and the memory for free.

yeah I am pretty pissed about missing out on gtx 280 and its not so much of a problem for the person who is getting the machine. this is more of a fun build more than anything else. The use of Solidworks is going to be mild if not low and its more for show. I use solidworks in school and have it on my outdated P4 computer and it runs fairly well even. In fact me and my friends recreated our entire dorm room. That includes beds, screws, springs, tv, closets everything and it stutters a bit while rotating it but its not that bad. Im sure my QUAD SLI setup will be just fine.

Oh and if you didnt read the blog I have 8 Mtron SSD drives that will be put in RAID 0 for testing. Eventually it will most likely end up in RAID 5

As for the RAID controller I've heard that adaptecs 5805 and some of the newer areca cards with the IOP341 have higher bandwidth but I have very little experience with RAID controllers. I could use some suggestions.

Oh btw, the SSD's are mainly for the OS and A few programs but we will be getting a couple 1 TB drives in the near future for mass storage. We have a couple thousand collars overhead to spend on extra parts that we might want to replace or add on. Another reason for Quad Sli is the we want the RAID controller to be PCIe and that leaves room for only 2 video cards. So Quad SLI is perfectly fine for that setup.

*sigh*

You (or your client) must be obscenely rich to throw away so much cash.

You could build 3 gaming systems that would stomp all over that machine for the same :(

haha yeah not that we are gonna use that mouse it was just in there to quote a price with all components. A better quality mouse and keyboard isnt something we were worrying about when I made that list.
