Performance issues in L4Dead

I just bought L4d during the 50% sale, and it just completely freezes my system for periods of 5-15 seconds at a time, which is an eternity. The sound stutters and loops while it freezes. This happens whether I run the game on max settings at a constant, smooth 60fps (which seems to be the cap) or at medium settings. I find that it happens less with lower settings though.

I've defragged my local content through the steamcommand and my soundcard/videocard drivers are updated :[

Any ideas?

Try disabling the multicore setting in the L4D options. It works fine for me but a number of people reported short freezes/looping, etc with it enabled.

Thanks dura, I was not aware of that option. I very rarely encounter this, but once in a great while I get freezing/looping. I'll give that a try.

I get this as well.... i ctrl alt and delete, wait for the desktop to resize itsself and it unfreezes. I think that fixes it for me, either that or it fixes itsself in the time it takes me to do that im not sure.

The multi-core option is turned On by default, and it is known to be the cause of freezing and stuttering issues, just disable it and it should fix most if not all of your issues. It did for me.

that's too bad it's the multi-core option that causes this, it's nice to see ALL of my cores being used for once!

Thank you very much for the info, I'll try this. :D

Much appreciated all! I asked almost everyone in game that I ran into, but no one had any idea.

Check event viewer to see if the display driver is crashing/recovering. Thats what happens to me. Otherwise your video card could be overheating.

Disabling multicore under the video options worked for me! :D perfect 60fps at high settings now and no more stuttering!

:D

Thanks again all!

I will be speaking with the California police if I don't get my money back from Paypal and would like this resolved ASAP.

My name is Garrett on the order and I will be following through with this. Tell her to email me at garrett@coloradowax.com Please let her know I am trying to get ahold of her or tell me a way to contact her, her phone number listed doesnt work and she is not responding to any of my emails.

WTF?

i find disabling multicore didnt get rid of all stuttering sound freeze. i notice most of the time, the loops cause only a momentary freeze. i just wait for it to resolve itself. it happens to give me a nvidia error when this happens and something happens with the display drivers.

Use Windows XP "you can just make a seperate gaming partition you know, and use fancy vista for other things that need more than 3 gig ram"

Also, Overheating is a problem and people don't realize it. CARDS are NOT adequately cooled these days.
