performance increase from X1900XT to X1900XTX?

How much better does the X1900XTX perform than the X1900XT?

I know it's probably not worth the money - but if the card is going to be a gift and I can manage to get the X1900XTX - how much better will it be?

no, the xtx is overclocked
just get an XT and overclock it yourself, don't burder the people that like to buy you an expensive gift

Not much better, we're talking about roughly 1 to 3 frames per second in high settings.

As for overclocking, all X1900 cards seem to be relatively weak in this department. Yes, you can O/C the XT but remember that:

a) from user reports around the web, it looks like the XTX O/Cs a bit better than the XT,
b) O/Cing the XT to XTX levels is not guaranteed.

Check any of the latest reviews with benchmarks comparison, and the difference is a matter of like 3-5 fps.

This has been debunked numerous times, I have yet to see an XT user that couldn't clock to XTX speeds and beyond. I am lazy and at stock voltages with stock cooling I can easily reach 690/800 on my XT, a lot of people can get even further by upping voltage or with better cooling. I wouldn't exactly call the 1900 series a dud in terms of overclocking. The XTX's tend to clock higher but as others has postulated that could be because they are cherry-picked cores.

I've read a few reviews / user reports where the XT didn't reach XTX speed. Nevertheless, I tend to believe you since 25 MHz on the core shouldn't be too much of a feat

Still, I give you a little story. The GF 6800 GT cards were in general considered good overclockers that should reach 6800 Ultra speeds with relative ease. When I bought a Leadtek card with pretty much the largest, heaviest and visually most impressive heatsink you could imagine, I was sure I could reach Ultra specs without breaking a sweat, given my good PSU, well-cooled case, etc. Nope. My card overclocked by around 20 MHz core. Memory OC was also crap. I got a second one. Same story. Memory OCed well but core did not. Around 20 MHz again. I got the third and last one. Even worse. Core OCed by 10-15 MHz, memory OC sucked.

My point: overclocking is never guaranteed. You're getting above official specs and even if hordes of other users claim they OC their cards to hell and back, you can always get a "dud"

Difference is about 2 to 5fps max don't bother with the xtx unless you want to do some serious overclocking

Sure that's always possible, but I consider a 65mhz increase to be pretty good on my XT. My previous card an X800XL could not be overclocked at all, period, end of story. So I think it's all about keeping things in perspective.

To the OP get the XT, you won't be sorry.

the xtx wont be that much faster....but it wil overclock more. since i think the cores are cherry picked, but i wouldnt wanna do that with a gift

if you dont believe me, go ask 5150joker.....his 1900xtx is clocked pretty damn high...past 700

The XTX is nothing but a "XT Platinum Edition" in disguise. Get the XT.

Here's what MunkyMark says about X1900XT vs XTX performance in F.E.A.R., 1280x960,
4x AA/8xAF:

X1900XT 625/1450: 63 FPS
X1900XTX 650/1550: 66 FPS

As you can see, nothing to spend nearly $100 more on. If the XTX was $30-40 more, it might be worth it, but it's not even worth $50 IMO. But that's me, and I actually have to be concerned about money unlike (it seems at least) some other people on this board.
