I just got a new Gigabyte P-35 DS3L which can go all the way to a 45nm Quad Core.... but am going to use my old D930. What is the performance difference.. is it very huge. Though I got a 1066 DDR2 to use with the D930.

the same memory can work with both, but the difference will be huge, twice the speed I would guess.

More relevant may be whether you need that additional performance. What applications do you expect to use? Is there anything right now that you find your Pentium came up short in?

On the other hand, it seems a shame not to let the P35 board play with a Penryn cpu. Confirming Mark's guess, I just looked up the quick and dirty Tom's Hardware charts and found that the E8400 is slightly more than twice as fast as the D930 at encoding to H.264, slightly less than twice as fast when encoding to XviD.

Although it will be hard to find charts showing this, there is also the issue of power consumption and heat generation. Today's 45nm C2D chips are much more energy efficient and generate a lot less heat than the older Pentium D chips while at the same time trouncing them in performance. You could probably pay for the upgrade in cpu from power savings alone in the course of like a year or so.

Better yet, get an e7200 for $135 and use even less power and a faster payback.

It's always difficult trying to judge savings on power efficiency. There are a lot of variables (local electricity costs, typical load, time). I would be a little surprised if one would save $200 from a year's saved electricity from the Penryn chip. $100 maybe, and perhaps that's enough to justify getting the E8400 anyhow.

If you wait until Q3, you may be able to get a decent quadcore if the rumoured Intel price cuts come true. The Q9550 is supposedly going to drop to near $300.

Get the e8400 it will kick your Pentium D's butt in any application you through at it. It will also run way cooler than the netburst. If you keep your computer running in a small room you will notice a huge difference. If you can afford it there is no reason not to get the E8400.

difference will be huge. Sell the Pentium here or on Ebay to offset ur new aquisition and get the E8400. It's a fantastic dual core cpu, you will not regret.
