Performance difference between 9800 gtx and 8800gts(g92)

So i am running 2x 9800 GTX in SLi, q9450 @3.4 ghz, OCZ reaper 2x2gb @850mhz. My buddy is running 2x 8800gts, q6600 @ 3.6ghz, ocz platinum @ 800mhz. I am scoring about 14500 in 3dmark Vantage and he is scoring 15500, somehow 1000points higher than me. Does anybody have any reasonable explanations for this? To me this just doesnt make any sense.

well i would say hes clocked higher but i doubt that since my gts couldnt clock to 9800gtx levels. I dont think his 200mhz edge on the cpu does much but maybe hes on a cleaner install.

Cleaner install? What makes an install cleaner than another? My install is pretty fresh actually and i dont have many other programs installed on it since i did the fresh install...maybe a couple of games and some benchmark programs but thats about it. As for the 200 mhz difference ion the processor...i was clocked @ 3.2 ghz but raised the clock to 3.4 to see if that really made a difference and it didnt. In fact i dont think that my score improved by much if any. I guess the only real thing that I can think of is that he might have something disabled in the options like AA or something. But then there might be something else that i cant think of as to why he would be scoring better than my setup.

What's his mobo?

Maybe he is using more up to date drivers or motherboard bios.
Different monitor resolution?
Different driver settings?

Hes got a evga 750i and i am running a xfx 780i. He does have a smaller monitor but when you run 3dmark it runs at a set resolution(1280x1024 i think). Might be different drivers but i wouldnt think that it would be a 1000 point difference. I suppose there might be a better driver out there for running SLi i will look into that. It may be the motherboards. Hmmm...thanks for the suggestions. i will do some research. you think different hard drives might be a factor?

Could very well be the motherboard. Examine the individual scores for 3DMark06.

As Zebo mentioned it may be any number of factors. The drivers may make some difference and he may be running some factory oced cards like I do (ASUS EN8800GTS 512 TOP). The fact that you're using a 780 mobo may also have something to do with all this. The 780 is basically the 680 plus that dreaded NF200 no good for nothing latency multiplier crap. The 780 does not sport native PCI-E v2.0 support so NV used the NF200 to create 2 x v2.0 PCI-E x16 out of 1 v2.0 PCI-E x16. The high latencies are even more evident under 3way SLI as the 3rd PCI-E x16 slot is v1.1 and comes from the southbridge.

For some reason OP thinks he can directly compare gfx card performance despite them being on complete different platforms. Bench them on the same rig to eliminate all those variables and get a direct "graphics card only" comparison.

They're basically the same card and his CPU is 200MHz faster so that accounts for the extra 1,000 points. Overclock that 9800GTX and you vill vin, mein heir!
