Performance difference between 6000+ and 6400+?

Is there any real world performance difference between the x2 6000 and x2 6400? I have a tight buget and the chips gerenally are seperated by $30. I could buy the 6400 black at the same price as the 6000 retail but it does not come with a fan/heatsink. A decent fan/heatsink would be $30 or so on top of the chips price.

yes the difference is 200mhz on each core which would translate into 4-5% improvement depending on if you use intense applications like burning dvd's, encode videos, converting cd's to mp3, video games. In day to day computing (e-mail, web surf, etc.) you probably would be hard pressed to be able to tell a significant difference.

Why don't you just overclock that 6000+ and make it a 6400+?? It's so simple, you could do it with any motherboard and the stock cooler also.

Going from 3.0 to 3.2ghz on an A64 is not "simple". Very few chips will actually be stable at that speed. 3.4ghz is the highest speed I've ever head of for an air-cooled A64.

OP: If you want to have some fun overclocking, look into the 5000+, or else get just about anything intel. The 2140 seems to be an easy 100% overclock to 3.2ghz (and it's cheaper than the 6400+).

I took my 6400 BE to 3.5 on air.

To the OP, yes it will give you a 5-7% increase in performance depending on the app you are using.

SickBeast has a good point, the 5000 BE overclocks very well and it's def. an option. If you don't want to overclock and want a guaranteed 3.2 ghz then get the 6400 BE
