I believe that Seagate has the better reputation of the two. At least that is what I have experienced and heard as well.

This probably belongs in the general hardware forum, but here is a link that may help you.

Probably because the raptor is SATA..the Cheetah is SCSI..

In any case, I've used mostly WD and some Seagates, and never had any of them die on me.

he wants a 250gb drive, you can't get a big 250gb raptor. the price be too high. getting a sataII with ncq is fastish and more room. just theres little between seagate and wd they both the top makes, quiet and quality. i trust both. but the hitachi has technology for big files Smooth Stream? technology such as video. thats one to consider.

the seagate has 8.0 access time. wd 8.5.

make sure you get the 16mb cache not the 8mb

i go with the seagate barracuda. 🙂

I bought two Seagate HD because of cheap price and both comes with 5 years warranty. I don't know about WD.

I've purchased SAMSUNG SpinPoint 250GB for a change and surprised how quiet it is compared to WD 250GB. (It's somewhat hotter than WD, though) I know this is off-topic but the whole thread is in a wrong forum, anyway. 😀

i've got a 250GB WD sata2 SE16 drive. This drive is excellent and i recommend it. Quiet, fast and cool.

EDIT: To be precise i've got a "Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache"

Best 250GB drive IMO.

I have never had any problem with a seagate drive. So I used them, but I do not think that western digital are worse either. The only brand I stay away from is IBM/Hitachi. To many Deathstars....

Seagate charges $25 for an advance replacement for a failed disc. Best Buy has the WD5000KSRTL 500gb SE16 drive for 159.00 this week. 62.3 on average transfer rate with HDTACH, my Raptor scores 65.. hmm.

Anything else?

Those are the two that I would recommend to anyone. I don't think you can go wrong with either. They both stand by their products and are really good drives. Prices usually dictates which of the two I purchase.

My 320GB 7200.10 is way faster than my 74Gb raptor. The difference in seek time isn't noticeable if you are dealing with large files where sustained transfer rates dominate. For an OS drive the raptor is nice, though.
