A) If your app is single-threaded, the soundcard isn't really necessary to offload any sound processing (not to mention that it only accelerates 3D effects, not stuff like winamp and iTunes).
B) If you want SLi G80 later on, you'll have to replace the motherboard - 975X only supports Crossfire.
C) Tell the software company to consider multithreading their software.

And as other people said, don't RAID-0 your big backup storage drives. Daily backups don't have to be fast (I assume you schedule them to be done after-hours), so just keep the final backup drives separate.

975x Supports SLI, just not officially. You will have no problem finding hacked drivers though. As for the system, I think with a singlethreaded app you may be better suited with a Xeon 7XXX series with 16 meg of L3 cache. In most single threaded repitive tasks the HUGE amount of cache will win.

Great lookahead tip for my Q1/07 build. How O/C'able are the Xeon 7XXX's?

I am assuming it would become a mobo support issue in that Xeon boards would not be all that hip to OC features. Bad assumption on my part?

My primary desire to get te X6800 is the unlocked mulitplier. Let's see how well I can play around with these desktop toys before I step up to the commercial hardware.

Who knows (someone probably, but not me...), metatrader on Itanium Monticeto may be the ultimate for time-to-results, baby steps for me for now though I guess.

Itanium is not great. The Xeon 7XXX series will be overclockable as well. A 7XXX holds the World Record CPU Score for #dMark06

That's pretty much it. The 71xx series are designed for 4S systems and go for around $2000. The big cache and HyperThreading makes it an effective processor for big, highly threaded enterprise applications like databases, but the Core 2 Extreme should have no problems crushing it in single-threaded apps.

I won't go into it too much, but I have not had pleasent experiences with vapochills. I would personally stick with a nice water cooling loop that you could put the video card onto.

Vapochill systems under the right hands are incredibly easy to maintain. Easiest as well to overclock when compared to water or air. In the end you need to exercise common sense when it comes to condensation and your motherboard. The thermal grease and heaters that comes with the vapochill kit will keep your running for quite some time. Check for condenstation every week for a month and if there is none you can pretty much say the system will keep going as long as you have it.

PM me if you have time to chat about the background motivating your note of caution on the vapochill unit, leveraging other's experiences is what I hoped to generate with this thread.

Note I am already committed on the VapoChill unit though, having pulled the trigger and bought the system last week.

Edit - Yoxxy, am having not such good luck tracking down a supplier of the Xeon 7140M or any accompanying info on mobo's, etc.

Do you have a link handy that you'd recommend I checkout? Googling for the XEON 7140M is just producing too much noise and very little signal. Even checking out Intel's website did not yield much, I can't truly suck at web-surfing this badly can I ?

Nice rig in the works.... I have been the VapoChill (PE) route, and have since retired it in favor of good watercooling gear. Just be sure the mobo is compatible with starting the LS, double check your insulation job, set the clamshell heaters properly, and you should be golden...
