is a raid array really worth the extra money and the decreased reliability ???

how much is the performance gain in real world??
 
If you have to ask, you probably have no need for a raid.

Drive performance is usually determined more by latency than bandwidth. Unless you have some serious bandwidth requirements (video or heavy multitrack audio editing) don't bother.
