performance boost from RAID-0 array??

is a raid-0 array really worth the extra money and the decreased reliability ???

how much is the performance gain in real world??

See my review of the Hitachi 7K80 here: http://www.techimo.com/reviews/ and follow the links for tests of that drive in several configurations of up to 4 drives in an array. The largest performance increase is in sequential reads - 50% or more which should help at boot time and loading programs and data. The least increase is in random access functions where even a slight degradation might occur.

.bh.

raid 0 gives good performance boost when i install stuff....thats basically the only place where i can notice a important speed boost...other than that, i dont see anything.
for example, warcraft 3 installed in 7s on raid0 compared to 12s with single hdd.

No noticeable benefit to RAID0 in working software. Is it dejavu or did you also post this in General Hardware?

Anyway, RAID0 is high risk for little gain.

working with large media files (HD recordings and what not), RAID0 is a huge boon for me

Two 2-drive RAID0 arrays ftw

Granted, if I could have affordable and effective RAID5 I'd be all over it, because then I wouldn't really have to worry about backing up any of my important files, nor would I feel as bad about the sacrificed capacity, 50% is just way too much to be worth it for RAID0+1
