Performance Bike Sucks My Wang

After buying a bicycle off eBay, I bought a bunch of stuff from Performance Bike to fill out the kit - helmet, gloves, shoes, etc... This was early last week.

I called them on Monday to ask where my order was since their "Check Order Status" page showed the transaction as not yet processed. I was informed that that page doesn't work (warning sign #1) but that my order had shipped and would arrive probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

I came home yesterday to find a partial delivery of my items -specifically 1 of 8 items (warning sign #2). The packing slip said that everything else would ship seperately and that the shoes were discontinued.

At no time in the week and a half since I ordered have I received notice that I would not be receiving my shoes - even though I specifically asked in the notes section of my order form AND filled in the e-mail address portion of the form (presumably for just such a purpose).

I have put off a scheduled ride twice waiting for these shoes as everything else I ordered I can do without if push comes to shove. Unfortunately, since the bike has clip in pedals, I can't ride it safely without the shoes. Had they notified me, I would have bought them at the local bike shop on one of the two occasions I was there this week. I also would have gotten to go riding on my new bike prior to going away for a whole week... :|

Bottom Line: I am pissed because they don't provide access to order status on their website, don't provide meaningful information when you talk to them on the phone, don't inform you when they will not be shipping your items, and don't provide customer service after 6pm EST..

For a company that has been doing mail order for over 15 years, this is pathetic...

On a similar note, check out the helmet that arrived for my bike today.

It really rocks. However, I ordered the matt black one, and the gloss arrived. Bit p!ssed off, but I think I'll just keep it. What do you think?

They've been going downhill for a long time now but in recent year or two it's just awful. I've even been flamed by their customer support by email. Unbelievable.

Which helmet was it? All I get is "Sorry, there are currently no products matching this description in our database. "

edit: nevermind, you updated the link

Well, I have to decide whether or not to buy these from them or go to the LBS and hope they have a decent cheap "mountain" shoe that is good for road bikes. (I want to be able to get off the bike and walk around)

I was going to meet a friend at Watchung Plaza at 6am for a 20 mile morning ride.

Montclair Bikery also runs group rides starting in Brookdale Park @ 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and early am on the weekends.

Whatever you do don't ever buy performance brand tires/tubes. They are horrible and you will regret it. I had two tires blow off the rims on my road bike. I took them back to performance and the mechanic there admitted to me that they suck and he would never put them on a customer's bike.

After this experience, I am done with them, but thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, it was fun riding to work one morning only to notice a huge bulge in my rear tire after I arrived at work and to have it blow off the rim on my ride home.

The front one blew off the rim after I mounted it the night before. I put a new tube on, checked everything and tried it again. I returned both tires the next evening.

I have been riding for years and I've never seen a tire blow off the rim let alone two in 24 hours!!! It was almost as if the tires were too large for the rim but I checked the size and they were correct.

Here's my rundown of the online bike stores I frequent:

performancebike.com: My first order took a week and a half to leave their warehouse  Everything else so far took 3-4 days... about 10 days total to get to my door.

nashbar.com: Ships in 2-4 days

supergo.com: Shipped my wheels the next day but I only go here if there's an online only sale since there's a Supergo nearby.

jensonusa.com: Ships in 1-2 days, but looks like more and more of their selection is MTB oriented. I used to just make 50 mile drive but it's just too far. BTW, the people who make those conversion "lamborghini doors" is next door. lol.

pricepoint.com: Ships in 2-4 days

aebike.com: Biggest selection I've seen yet, but you better not need it right away since they're slooooooooooooooooow. My seatpost took 3 weeks to ship  but it was the cheapest price online.

cambriabike.com: Ships in 2-3 days, price isn't that great but they have awesome deals on closeouts, especially on Fox forks.

I think I'm just spoiled by online computer stores who ship the same day or the next. :D
