OTA is the answer.Yeah, I'm noticing that on my new tv - our fios dvr doesn't look all that great anymore - pixels, compression, etc. are far more noticeable on our newly bigger set since fios is broadcasting at 1080i. Bluray is jawdropping though

I'm pretty sure not all content on FIOS is broadcast at 1080i. Some channels/programs are certainly lower than 1080i from what i can tell when I'm watching since I have it as well. Yes, Bluray is draw dropping.
This is what prompted me to hang up my Xbox 360. Content looked horrendous on it when viewed above 50".
When you get a TV as large as 70" or larger, you really can't mess around with low def content. Viewing the wrong channel that has a slightly lower image quality, or something like that can make you just be like "nope nevermind". My Amazon Prime though on a lot of shows looked FANTASTIC, and I'd never go back to a smaller TV size than 70 inches for a main television.
For me when I get my own place, 70 inches in bedroom/living room, 100" projector in dedicated theatre room (maybe bigger but again, you're dealing with content quality at that point). Xbox One and PS4 will help me enjoy my 70 inch TV currently, but right now, my PC does the majority of the use of it.
Even on XBMC, when certain movies have low quality fanart it just drives me insane (older movies which weren't shot in HD).

I was drooling at an 80" Sharp the other day. But at that size 1080p is just inadequate. Bring on the the 4K!
Amen. Since my collection is all in HD, I have started taking HD screenshots and replacing the artwork in XBMC to look better on my 65 inch plasma.
That's what's so striking, on my 50" 720p plasma streaming HD content seemed to be not bad compared to fios-tv, now that I'm on a 60" streaming obviously surpasses cable on many occasions. Amazon instant looks great, itunes Hd is fantastic, and even netflix isn't bad when the conditions are right - had no idea set top tv would be a step backwards. Of course it depends on the source, kid-shows on netflix look atrocious for example (dvd sources for the most part).
The biggest change is that piracy isn't really all that appealing now - blurays are less than $15 and the quality breathtaking, plus 3d's a nice gimmick to impress the relativesIt's cool since I stopped collecting dvds in college and now have a reason to start collecting again!
The wife and I have been eyeballing a Sharp 85" at our local BB store recently. Looks awesome. We're building a new house so early next year we need to buy something and that 85" sure looks sweet. Probably be better out by then however. Looks like furniture will be 11ft-12ft back from wall.
