So what do you still say Coke when you want Sprite or Dr Pepper? How do people communicate that they want something else?

Well generally when I want a Sprite I ask for a Sprite and if I want a Dr Pepper I ask for a Dr Pepper. I guess you are implying that a Sprite is the same as a 7-Up and a Dr Pepper is the same as a Mr Pibb but unlike cola drinks there are not a ton of variations on those that would result in the same type of generalization there is when you ask for a coke when referring to a cola drink.

More like this: if you walked into someone's house and they said, "Hey, want a drink? We have water, juice, or _________." What would that blank be? Would they say coke (for generic soda), pop, or soda?

***I don't do this*** but if I had to choose I would say "Coke" over "pop".

I've heard "Coke" used for any soda. SO "Sprite" or "Dr. Pepper" or "Mountain Dew" in response to "What kind of Coke?"

For those yankees that are confused:

"Hi there shug, How ya doin'? Whatcha drinkin'? " (waitress, usually toothless or missing a tooth, drives a pickup truck, Caucasian, occasionally pregnant, often barefoot, chewing gum with hair styled by a family member)

"Howdy baby. Lemme get a coke." (Bobdole369 - sportin' a fishing pole or an airboat key - often with alligator wrasslin on his mind - dip in his lower lip)

"What kinda coke? We have Pepsi, Mt. Dew, Diet, Sierra Mist, Dr. Pepper, OJ, sweet tea". (waitress)

"Oh I'll have Mt. Dew please." (slaps waitress's ass.)

if I went down south and ordered a Coke and they asked me what kind I wanted, I would shoot the place up. That makes about as much sense as using Big Mac for a generic burger term.

"I'd like to order a Big Mac please"
"what kind"
"a Double Whopper with Cheese"

Royale with cheese?

Pop is just an old-fashioned term from the soda jerk days, so it's not like it's some weird name for soda... it does have relevance.

Coke for soda is likee saying Kleenex for facial tissue, Jacuuzi for spa, etc.
Nobody gives a shit.
Coca Cola FTW.
Even major Pepsi shareholders drink Coca Cola. Only dumb, brain washed employees of Pepsi drink Pepsi.
Why? Because it sucks.

No, Why? Because when I need to blown my nose I just need a tissue, I don't have a band preference. I doubt many people do, but when I want a Soda, I tend to want a specific one. There's little to no variation in tissues, the same isn't true about soda. The fact the states that use Coke as a generic term for Soda are down south says a lot. Those are the same states that love Bush and think he was a great president.

Pepsi ~= Coke ~= Water in terms of how much I enjoy them, depending on mood I guess.

But all are >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> diet drinks. Fake sugar tastes horrible.

Pepsi Throwback = heaven. Start selling it here in cans and 12 packs and I'll never drink Coke again.

Meh, I'm drinking a Pepsi right this moment. Coke is too harsh, and Diet Coke is nasty as all diet pop is. I'll drink Mello Yello, but otherwise I prefer Pepsi products like Mt Dew, Dr Pepper. And the Throwback stuff is awesome, that trounces everything that Coke makes.

Impressive. I had no clue Diet Coke was popular in any shape or form.

But market-share data to be released Thursday by Beverage Digest is expected to confirm Diet Coke pulled ahead in 2010.
Why report the rumor?? Just wait a day until numbers hit. Patience people.

As far as terminology goes ...
I can't believe people still use the term "soda". That's sooo 40s-50s. Check out the isolated Soda Enclave surrounding St. Louis on that map someone posted.

"Coke" is only generic for a cola. If I ask for a Coke, I expect some kind of cola in return. Otherwise, it's soda for the other flavors.

Actually cola is the generic term. If you ask for coke, they will ask you if pepsi is ok because they don't have coke.

So are you one of those people that lecture people when they say they are "xeroxing" something or ask you to hand them a "kleenex"? Like it or not there are lots of trademarked names that have become synonymous with the product or action in general. In large swaths of the US "coke" is just such a name.

If anybody said xeroxing I'd smack them in the face. Some names really aren't synonymous.

When I worked at a semi-fast food place, it was only the obese fatties who ordered an extra large diet coke.

Diet coke is good once you get use to not drinking a sugar sluge drink all the time.

But I bet Coke would sell more diet if they did not have Coke Zero. So Diet Coke should have even higher numbers but coke thinned them out a little with coke zero. But coke zero also picked up quite a few coke drinkers as well.

Maybe a bit, but it's far from a 1:1 ratio I'd bet. I love Coke Zero, but have always hated Diet Coke. If Zero wasn't around I still wouldn't touch diet Coke. I know I'm not alone there either. I think I even like Zero over regular Coke anymore.

Who the hell says cola? I don't think I've heard that anywhere. Asking to clarify when a Coke is ordered is only acceptable if more than 1 brand is carried(rare). Otherwise, you bring whatever cola you carry.

If I order "Coke" and you bring me "Pepsi" and don't clarify - The Pepsi goes on you.
