People with wireless AP/routers.... Which one do ya have?

And do ya reccomend it?

I just got my USR 2140 802.11b Wireless Card in the mail today and now i need a access point (or a router) to use it.

I found the D-link 1000AW for $59 AR
and a Netgear MR-314 for $79 AR

Hmmmm....

(Sorry not to post this in Networking, but i thought it might be a little too Off-Topic for there)

 
I have the D-Link DI-713P WAP/router and it works fine... used to have a Belkin AP but I gave it to my friend. Both were easy to configure and worked within 10 minutes of opening the box. We have a 2800sq ft house and reception is fine throughout... in the backyard by the pool, in the garage, and on the driveway 🙂 I haven't actually tried testing the limits by driving down the street with my laptop but it works well enough in the house.

I also have the Linksys BEFW11S4. As long as you make sure that it has the updated firmware, it will work well.

 
I have a linksys BEFW11S4 and it's been nothing but trouble. I'm really kicking myself in the ass for getting everything combined. I would have much prefered to get a seperate AP and router so if something is messed up, it is easy to pinpoint the problem.

Im leaning away from buying the $59 dlink, i dont know if i wanna deal with tigerdirect...

Looks like Bestbuy had the D-Link 614+ (22mbps) for $89 AR. Maybe ill pick this one up instead...
 
using a smc 7004awbr. it was the first one i picked up, but because i was having problems with my wireless connection from my desktop and windows xp, i thought the smc was a piece of crap... ended up buying a d-link 713p and linksys befw11s4. turns out all along that the card i was using, a USR2415 (basically the 2410 with a pci adapter) was the problem. i ditched the pci card and got a linksys wusb11 v2.6 and all works well on my win xp desktop. btw, i'm also using the usr2410 with win2k on a laptop and that works perfectly... strange how the pcmica card works so much better than the pci card, though i think it may also have something to do with the drivers.

depending on what OS you plan to use, windows xp may have some problems with the zero wireless configuration feature conflicting with routers or cards. also after reading some newsgroups, some have said that the netgear mr314, linksys befw11s4, d-link 713p, and the older version of the 7004awbr (which i don't have) uses the same hardware internally... and all have reported some sort of connection drops with these routers and xp.

Well i think im gonna pick up the D-Link 614+ at Bestbuy after work today and try that with my USR 2410 runnin XP. Guess i can always return it if i have any driver/connectivity issues.

I have the SMC Barricade wireless and am happy with it. I use an Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card with it. I had a Dlink PCMCIA card that had horrible reception.

Orinioco's gets awesome reviews, but they also cost an arm and a leg. From what ive seen Dlink and Netgear seem to get good reviews, and since i can get the dlink for $89, i think thats the route im going to take.

Yeah but what about AP's, does Orinico also make excellent AP's?

I've been lusting after a bundle Necxdirect.com has it has an AP, USB and PC card for around $300'ish, every now and then they'll come out with a $35 off $300 coupon which makes it a sweet deal.
 
I use the Linksys befw11s4, easy to use, its really idiot proof, I get good throughput throughout my house, and I think it supports mac blocking (not sure, I haven't had the need to try it won't reach to the street, and my neighbors are about a thousand feet away)
 
I'd go with the Linksys. i have one and 2 of my clients use it. it has some really nice features.

Also, PC mag had a review of WAP's and they chose the Linksys one for editors choice in the home small business section.

Yeah the firmware is a bitch, not to mention you need a wired NIC to upgrade it (why buy a friggin wireless lan if you need a wired nic?) but I guess it is the same for all? Keep the firmware updated and you will be fine, just make sure it takes the update, I updated one wireless adapters firmware, it didn't totally take, until several weeks later (only like 5 restarts later) then it took and of course I had communication problems with the router (which didn't have the same version firmware) so I swapped out wireless adapters to see if that was the problem, well it seems that my computer flashed the firmware on that wireless adapter too, so not only did it not work on my computer, but it didn't work on its original computer, it was a b!tch to trouble-shoot. Actually to hell with this router don't get it, if you download a lot of stuff, it starts slowing down and you have to reset it, not worth the trouble, get a real router lol.

Actually, it drops the WAN connection, not the LAN. My computers could access the router perfectly, but the router would lose the WAN every two days like clockwork and need to be reset via the reset function in the router's online menu. This just stopped happening after the first few weeks and now it seems fine.

That used to be a competitive deal but prices on 802.11b have dropped so much recently that's probably too much premium to pay. Orinoco clients are well worth the money, and the residential AP has better security than all the popular Made in Taiwan/China models sold as Linksys, SMC, D-Link, etc. 🙂 But from what I understand, their AP isn't as clearly better than others as the client cards are.

I personally own a Compaq AP+router, and the only common feature it doesn't have is port ranging or triggered port forwarding rules (which I can live without). It also has basic security (WEP, MAC address filtering) as all the other SOHO brands do, but definitely inferior to business-class APs.
 
Thanks for the info manly. I suspected Orinoco's AP's aren't as good as their cards are, so I'll probably get an Orinoco card unless I find an insanely good deal on another brand.

So if you had to choose between the popular DLink and SMC AP which would you choose and why? I don't need a print server.

Which chipset do the Orinoco cards/USB have?

I don't see how the AP's wouldn't be as good as their cards considering they run off the cards.
