People with privacy fences - wyngate or flatboard style?

i have someone come give an estimate for a fence for our backyard today. the total length is 183 feet with 1 gate. i'm looking to get a 6' tall fence with a 1' lattice on top of it most likely.

i was just curious if people have one, if they prefer a wyngate vs. a flatboard style and what the reasons are. they gave me estimates on both and it's like a $300 difference for the wyngate one since it uses more wood ($5000 vs $4700).

in case these terms might be called something elsewhere, this is the wyngate style:

i'm just wondering what some pros/cons might be to either of them. i'll ask my wife what she thinks as well but i am kind of torn between the two. i kind of like the look of the wyngate better, but i have also heard people say that like neighbors weeds and stuff can creep through the little slits in the fence as well if they don't take care of stuff.

Wyngate is a pain in the ass for weed whacking.

Yeah, the Wyngate creates a space at the ground level that is very hard to maintain, usually see them with long grass I between the seperate sides. Unless you leave a nice gap at ground level and makes sure it stays there.

Flatboard provides more privacy which is what I'd want.

hmm okay thanks for that. i never even thought about that at all but it makes sense. (in regards to maintenance)

and yeah the flatboard definitely gives more privacy since you can't see through it. that isn't TOO much of an issue to me though because you have to be at that angle to see through. it's weird cause our back neighbors are up a little hill and they have a deck. so even with a privacy fence they will still probably be able to see in our backyard when out on their deck, but the extra 1' lattice will help that too. it's just weird being able to look right into our neighbors yard though. and we plan on doing a major backyard renovation soon and want it to be fenced in after we do so.

Wyngate lasts longer if you're in an area prone to windstorms or hurricanes. Keeping the bottom clean shouldn't be too hard, just spray it.

Daddy's a hoarder so my neighbours took the initiative to put a privacy fence up to avoid "the mess" (their overheard words). They used a Wyngate.

What I've noticed about Wyngates is that they're not really private. At the right angle, and there are many, you can see right in. I do like how they look over flatboard style fences though.

We thought of this for my parents place but they do take a while to grow. Town eventually installed a privacy fence to separate us from the mall (we back on to a city owned greenbelt). It's the flatboard style. Easy to maintain. Keeps people from staring in to the yard. Wish they had put up a proper sound barrier though because the road noise is getting ridiculous.

That's what cinder block fencing is for.

definitely not putting more trees in. we have huge towering trees that already have enough leaves in our yard. and i actually cut down a peach tree that did block part of the neighbors house, but i didn't like it because all the peaches would be on the ground when i cut the grass and it also attracted a ton of bees.

bumping just to see if any of the normal day crew has any opinions on this.

after more thought i'm now leaning towards the flatboard. i was at a bbq last night and the owner of the house had just gotten a new 7' flatboard fence installed and i really liked the look. he also told me that previously he had the wyngate style (and actually 1 side of his fence was still wyngate, it's a row house and it was the one between him and the neighbor) and that he didn't like how much you could see through it. and as i was talking to him i realized that you actually could see through it a lot.

Of the two options, flatboard seems like a better choice.
