I agree with this... I work from home... during my lunch hour I'm in the living room just enjoying my food in front of the tv... I let the phone ring through all the time... screw them.

And if the cellphone goes off while I'm busy... I'll glance at who's calling and just hit the side button to mute for later.

i hate cell phones, and i agree with all of your points jbourne. cell phones are complete trash and should only be used for emergencies...REAL emergencies.

Never had a teacher who left his/her cell phone on in class. In fact my teachers taught cell phone maners. Most had the rule that if they heard a cell phone and they found out who it was you lost a letter grade off your final grade. If they even SAW a cell phone out durring a test you failed the test (this one was 100% universal).

One of my teachers even explained it by saying, "While you are in this class, the material we are covering should be your #1 priority. If it isn't you are wasting your time and mime. Also, in a business setting you boss will not be pleased if your cell phone is going off durring meetings, and so neither will I."

heh, i once had to pick up the cell phone while getting "maintainence from the gf".
but that was different, we were vacationing with a bunch of friends and they called from the other room, if i didnt pick up they probably would've knocked on my room, which would've cause more interruption.

The OP has obviously struck a nerve with this rant. I am dissappointed we haven't heard from more of the offending cell phone users though. I would like to hear from the people who think it is ok to ignore the person (or people) in front of them to have a conversation with whoever decides to call on the phone.

What I really hate is all those people you see walking about with damned phones hanging out of their ear. WTF!??! Sure, maybe it's convenient, but you look like a god damned idiot. You also can't tell who the f' they are talking to half the time. Are they talking to the person next to them or to someone on the phone? And now I've noticed that more and more of those phones have a f'ing bright blue blinking LED on them. Arrrgh!!! So now you see these people walking around with a blinking bionic ear. GTFO. I guess implants are next.

I'll concede that they can be handy at times, but overall I feel they are a damned nuisance. My personal philosophy is this: If I can't be reached at home or at work, then I'm f'ing somewhere I don't want to be called.

I'm a student not a worker. I glance at my phone and if it's my mom or dad, then I'm obligated to answer. If it's someone else, I push the temporary silence button.

I have the opposite problem, my friends and gf included have a really bad problem with picking up their cell phone. Even when they are just sitting at home. Worst part is that it is the only way I can contact them in case I needed something.

Had this problem my last year in the Navy. I would walk up to a person and try to tell them something that needed to be done or ask them to do something and they'd look at me and say: "OK, shoot me an email."

I'm guilty of that . However, I do it simply because it leaves a papertrail of the request. Also, I have a very, very short-term memory and it serves as a good reminder. If other people need to be brought in on the task, it's easy to forward it to them and/or CC them on subsequent communications.

Not necessarily trying to defend it... just giving my perspective .

There's a reason why people answer their cell phones with such urgency. The phone ringing represents one of the weapons of influence: Scarcity. You've got something and it's going to gone soon. People feel they have to get to it before they lose it for good.

I went kayaking with a bunch of guys I know yesterday... 25-30 miles on a river, none of us have cell phones. Very enjoyable trip not to have any interuptions by cell phones.

My grandmother does that with her landline phone. She gets calls all the time. We could be in the middle of an important discussion and the phone will ring. I'll tell her to let the answering machine get it but she's always so worried it's going to be an emergency and that they *won't* leave a message. Old people, can't live with 'em, wouldn't be alive without 'em.

I agree. If it's important enough to call me, it's important enough to leave a message.

At least with cell phones, all the annoying calls (her mom and sister, telemarketers, etc) go to her. Of course, it goes off at dinner all the damn time, and she ALWAYS has to answer it.

But the funny thing is the telemarketers. My wife will sign up for ANYTHING if there's a free prize involved. This got us on every fscking list under the sun. At least with cell phones, the problems she's created remain her problems .

If my phone rings, I can be confident that it's someone I want to talk to!!!

Yea I can't stand people in public places yapping on their cells, I avoid talking on my cell in public like the plague, home is different however.

My phone is always on, and in ringer mode except for class/movies. Work doesn?t really apply as I just leave it at my desk/office (won?t annoy cube-mates). When I do get a call when I?m out with friends or just hanging out I hit the silencer ASAP, then I take a peak at who it is. Once I know who it is I run through all the reasons that I can think of why they would calling me, it?s normally for no good reason at all and they will get the VM. Exceptions are if it is from some people that I rarely talk with anymore.

This only applies though if in non-public places. I do NOT pick up no matter the person if I?m out with friends (restaurants, movies, ballgame, mini-golf ? whatever). If I?m out in public I will do everything I can to not be ?That cell phone guy.? I hate it when others do it and like hell if I?m going to be a hypocrite. Now ? when I?m at home and with friends (as in a group not 1 on 1) I am much more likely to pick up. I do my screening process and if they are going to tell me something more entertaining than what is going on right now with my friends I will answer. I don?t think it is too rude as there are other people that my friends can talk with while I excuse myself and blabber on my cell.

Granted I don?t get a ton of calls out of the blue, perhaps 2-3 times a week. The other times the cell is used for co-ordination/planning of things to do. I will probably have to think up a new way of screening of the volume of calls rises though as I really try to avoid being ?that guy.?
