because OTA HD is accessible and free with less compression than your cable or satellite HD?

Some people do have legit claims here, though. Some of the earlier HDTV's were "HDTV Ready" meaning they accepted HD Signals from a Digital Converter box, but did not have a built in HDTV tuner, making OTA transmissions a lot more difficult to configure - and limited, to my understanding, but I'm no expert here so one can feel free to chime in.

Why do I need to spend more for it?

I have a HTPC hooked up to my 50 inch Kuro, and can download/watch it free through Hulu.com, Netflix online videos, or other sites. Why do I need to spend more for HD stuff?

EDIT: I also have TWC free HD for standard cable, but solely because it's free. Although I watch HD content from blu-ray, or HTPC instead usually. My eyes are bad enough that HD doesn't give me a big difference, and I don't have contacts (and dont usually wear glasses at home).

Thanks for the Hulu, didn't know about that one!, now I can watch Cops special friday night edition I had missed out on..

Hulu actually has more content then just Cops, but congrats on being an idiot.

They have:
American Dad
Family Guy
The Office
Arrested Development
House
Bones
BSG
etc

Then add in Netflix, and other ways to watch your shows (disk based content on DVD/Blu-ray, the networks website, iTunes/Amazon, or other download methods).

BTW HD sports is just as stupid as SD sports.... It's still watching something because you're too lazy to go out and fuckin play it yourself.

Because you can't be entertained by it unless you're doing it? By that logic, whatever you watch is stupid because you're too lazy to go out and do it yourself. I'm sure the only thing stopping EVERY sports fan from actually playing professional sports is pure laziness. You know what? I'm going to stop being lazy and take a drive down to Gillette Stadium and demand to play. You're right, I shouldn't be a lazy spectator anymore because I don't have the right to sit back and enjoy the highest level of competition possible. Thanks for opening my eyes up and realizing that I'm lazy and shouldn't enjoy a couple of hours of watching sports each week and instead quit my job, forfeit my current career and "decide" to be a pro player.

Cmon, that's the dumbest anti-sports argument I've ever heard.

This is such a hilarious subject for people to actually resort to name calling over. I'm quite perplexed by this.

I mean, it's just a TV standard. Seriously!

You don't have to pay anything for HD, no extra.

Except for an antenna if that's what you're referring to.

If you have cable and a TV with a QAM tuner, you can get the networks in HD for no additional cost.

I am not saying you can "choose" to be a pro player.

I just would rather play the actual effin sport, rather than watch others who play it. What I watch are shows that I can't partake in. For example I can't hop in the nearest Viper and go shoot some robots.

If you are entertained by sports then fine have fun and watch them, but don't tell others that the *only* reason for HD is sports.

Oh cmon, you're just too lazy to deal with the jail time that would follow stealing the Viper 😛 😉

I came back to say I'm a horrible, dirty, disgusting, filthy hypocrite. That is all.

Canceled your HD service?

No, I signed up for it. I swore up and down I wouldn't care about HD channels since I never really watch TV (I do care about HD Movies and gaming, however) ...but man....things changed once I took the plunge and ordered it up.

Idk about you guys. I use a comcast cable box to a DVD/VHS player to a VGA box to get my TV on my monitor. Since i live in a single room, 22" of SDTV is fine enough. My VGA box upconverts to 1680x1050, so even games look decent enough via RCA. Especially when i'm laying in bed 5 feet away.

Since its digital cable, the video is as good as SDTV can get and the sound is pretty badass through my Logitech 230's.

Dont hate of SDTV on LCDs. Its not bad whatsoever.

that don't have the HD service. What the hell is wrong with them? I went over to my friend's apartment yesterday and he has a 55 inch tv and has digital cable but doesn't have HD. I know someone that spent $3k on a tv and is refusing to spend $5-10 a month for HD service. How the hell can you spend $3k on a tv and then watch that fuzzy basic cable? Why not just buy a tube tv for $300 and be done with it.

Nothing. They simply don't see the difference between SD and HD, the extra money's not worth the difference to them, or they don't think the HD channels available on cable are worth paying for.

Try to wrap your mind around this concept: it's okay for people to like different things and have different priorities.

If you think you can change your friend's mind, bring over your Blu-Ray player and hook it up to his TV. Or try rabbit ears and find an OTA HD broadcast, instead of whining about it on the internet.

I agree with the OP; it's totally ridiculous. It's fine if you don't watch TV, but I know people who spend $50+/month on satellite/cable and don't have HD channels. At least get an antenna for free HD locals!

A lot of people just want a big tv. In today's times a big tv is going to be an HDTV. They don't care/understand high def, 1080p, etc but they do understand 50" diagonal.

I used to have basic cable @ $15/mo, but I canceled it as soon as football season ended. Football is the only thing I watch on TV. I have an antenna but it's not worth setting it up because I live on the ground floor in a city and the reception sucks.

I'm thinking about canceling my cable. I'm paying $75 a month for the luxury of DVRing a few shows (which are on Hulu anyway) and the ability to turn on the tv for an hour a week and just watch whatever.

Actually directview tube HDTV's (CRT's) (not rear projection but actual tube based widescreen HDTV's) are INCREDIBLY expensive. They weigh well over 200 lbs and shipping them is usually not an option. The picture quality is far superior than any LCD and approaches plasma - but DLP and LCD's >1080p match it.

I have a complicated response to that.

My home situation is complicated. My roommates - who pay for most of the cable - have it under an old roommates name. They are no longer on speaking terms. Niether of the other roommates have good enough credit to open an account with the cable company. They have both ripped off the cable company and owe hundreds each for old bills. I am able to get an account, as is my wife. However with the porn habits and the payperview ordering I am NOT willing to put up my credit card - OR my good credit against either of these deadbeats.

It's so damn cheap to live where I do....

If I want HDTV I watch it as god intended - with rabbit ears where the picture is unmolested by the cable companies evil compression (comcast compresses to about 2/3 bitrate all over the air channels).

I can't get the cable based HD channels or premium stuff on HD - because we cannot make changes to the account without the old roommates identitiy. SO this situation continues and we hope we are never found out because then we are totally fucked and roomies will get what is coming to them.

I play all my hi-def content via my PS3.

I'm pretty sure the OP is referring his question to people who actually watch cable. Hence him bringing up his friend with an HDTV and cable.
