Jeez I am seriously getting anoyed with these dumb people who think they know something about computers. I have gotten more dumb questions, than I can stand. Anyway me being the technical guru of everything, everybody asks me questions. So now I am charging for my advice so these cheapstakes can pay me and I won't mind getting pissed off, because I will get paid.

Also these people SHOULD NOT BE BUILDING COMPUTERS!!!!! I have no idea why they are trying it but WTF!!!

"Hey how can I format my hard drive without losing any data?"
"Hey why is mye 1Ghz Athlon running at 750Mhz?"
"So to format I right click on the drive in Windows and goto Format right?"
"Hey you told me to format in DOS where do I buy that?"
"Do I need to get AGP or PCI memory?"

I kid you not I was asked these questions in the past 2 days.

Hey, can you tell me why my other computer doesn't work? I turn off the light in my room, and the computer turns off, have any ideas?

Also, my AMD processor started smoking when I was running it without the heatsink, so I dumped a pitcher of water on it. can I sue AMD for not having thermal protection, and RMA the CPU?

How dare these people try to build their computers and learn something for themselves by asking "dumb" questions! The nerve!!:p FYI I believe many members right here built their first computers not knowing as much as they do now when starting out by asking questions, getting answers from their peers, doing as much as they can by themselves, making "stupid" mistakes, and learning by trial and error.

Word of advice, do NOT build the computers for these friends/acquaintances of yours. If they're that clueless and beyond help, just tell them to get a Dell or Compaq and maybe upgrade them if they're adventurous. That way, tech support is OFF YOUR HANDS. :)

Its not like I don't mind helping peers. Just these morons who SHOULD NOT BE BUILDING A COMPUTER, who know what RAM and CPU stand for and think they can build a computer. I am all for helping people learn this stuff, but when they argue with you and tell you your wrong because one of their friends has a DDR to SDRAM converter it gets really pointless and stupid.

I am currently helping this 8th grader build his computer, but he really does read up and attempt to learn the stuff I suggest. I have no problem with that and I would do that any day.

BTW I have suggested they get a Dell or something and they refuse because they will make 'big money' doing this for a living if they learn it.

EDIT: hehe should be PC2100 to PC133 converter... ehh DDR is SDRAM

You are becoming wise beyond your yeaars Little Grasshopper, err, I mean ai42. Always remember that no good turn goes unpunished.

Seriously, it is a pleasure to help some people build their first computer. They listen to your advice, they research and they are usually successful.

There are, though, some morons who shouldn't be allowed to own a credit card or a phillips screwdriver. They tell you what their problem is, you tell them what to do and they immediately tell you that you don't know what you're talking about.

Oh well.

After you've finished gouging them, try to sell them one of those waterproof sponges or solar powered flashlights.

Luckily, I do not know any such people. My friends know I know a lot about comps, so they don't try to argue with me. :D

Don't be angry just because you don't know the answers to the questions. I'll be glad to help you answer them.

"Hey how can I format my hard drive without losing any data?"

Do it from within Windows and then it will save all your information in your RAM and then you can load it back on with a bootable floppy disk.

"Hey why is mye 1Ghz Athlon running at 750Mhz?"

As we all know the 1 ghz Athlon has a special throttling feature that gradually increases the speed of the processor whenever it feels that you need the extra speed. So it starts off at 750mhz but gets faster once you start playing games.

"So to format I right click on the drive in Windows and goto Format right?"

Yes this is the easiest way to do it. Make sure that you have your bootable floppy disk so that you can load back all your important formation that Windows backed up into RAM for you.

"Hey you told me to format in DOS where do I buy that?"

DOS is for lewsers.....format from within Windows.

"Do I need to get AGP or PCI memory?"

For now AGP memory is better but whenever the 66mhz PCI memory becomes standard then you can buy either one.

See, now was that so difficult? ;)

I was at a friend's house when someone who worked for some sort of computer company showed up and was building a computer freee of charge for the teenage girl at the house. The darn fool was working on it with the power on. When someone does something really stupid I just exclaim, "Some people just shouldn't be allowed to breed."

i've been having the same frustrations with friends... not regarding building computers but just not bothering to learn anything and coming to me for the simplest things like, yeah, how to format a hdd... how to register on an internet forum?!
rolleye.gif

there's a huge difference between teaching them and simply providing answers, i have another friend i dont mind helping out cos he LEARNS... im sick of being tech support to friends who expect me to be their fvcking manual!

argh! i still get pissed off thinking about a whole week of walking my friend through format/install of windows over the cell phone! and its more frustrating when they dont know anything about their systems.

and dont u hate it when that's the only thing they come to u for... it's not even a social call, it's just *phone rings*, *pick up*, "hey how do u do this..."

it not THAT hard to learn, i remember building and overclocking my first computer after reading up on the internet and through trial and error; and i dont think im a genius.

I know just enough to get myself into trouble, lol. :p

It's been a while since I've formatted a system by myself (Win 95/98). Is the process much different in say 2k or XP?

Splattering my ignorance here,...

<<"Do I need to get AGP or PCI memory?">>

I don't know the answer to that one.

That's not always true. I have an acquaintance, we'll call him Cletus, and about a year ago he built a computer for his friend during the spring semester. Well Cletus comes home from school and he's about as cocky as you can get with his vast knowledge of computers. He starts butting into conversations I'm having with people about computers. He goes on and on about how he can "build" various chips (processors, graphics chips, etc) now because he took a class on it. And to top it all off he starts correcting me on my computer "grammar". For example, as anyone who has worked at a Help Desk or done some sort of Tech Support knows people don't always refer to computer parts by their given names: Computer = Hard Drive, Monitor = Screen, 3 1/2" Floppy Disk = Hard Disk, etc.... Well once I accidentally referred to a floppy drive as a floppy disk and he got a smug look on his face and said "You mean Floppy DRIVE don't you?"

I could go on, but you get the point. I don't give a flying rip that Cletus is learning about computers. Heck, it's actually a good thing because now he'll stop bothering me, but it's his cocky attitude that chaps my a$$.

lol, yeah, the phone rings and you don't even get hello, they just start yelling at you about how their computer is doing something stupid, lol, like somehow you're in cahoots with their computer to ruin their day ,this is particularly special when you didn't even build the computer.

When you gp to parties you are always being dragged into somebody's den to examine an ailing Compaq

the friends who think you'd live to spend endless hours researching a system for them, cherry picking pasrts.. so they can buy a Dell .. and then they are totally mystfied as to why you don't wanna give up your fee weekends teaching them all about the magic of winders for free.

In case you can't tell it's been just a ducky evening here
