people who skip vacations are incredibly selfish

Even people who manage to remain productive at work can have problems. If they're always at work, then they're not with their family and friends. If they're working while on vacation, for the time that they're on the job, they're not really present.

"You can't be in two places at once," says Friedman, who notes how common it is to hear stories about people who don't know their parents very much because they were always working.

Friedman adds that an unbalanced emphasis on work can strain family and social life: "When you come up for air, you may see that you're alone, or that your relationships have gone on without you."

Very disturbing that this is happening in our country.

It is true about the Japanese.

I dated a girl and I was the only free time friend she could afford to have.
So we could only date once a month and sometimes twice and sleep over and have breakfast and then say our goodbyes.

its a big problem in Japan. Now they are considering a law that you must take your vacation days.

I occasionally hear people I work with complaining that they can't possibly take all their vacation. These are the same people who you get emails from at 11:00 at night and on weekends. The people who really suffer (other than the co-workers who have to deal with the complaining) are the ones who are trying to have relationships with these people. And if they have children, then that just makes it worse.

Quick, someone tell me what Jenny McCarthy's opinion on this subject is.

I like to make all of my big life decisions based off of the expert advice of former porn stars.

Hmm...I haven't been vaccinated for anything since I was a kid, and I haven't taken a real vacation in at least 5 years. The only reason I did because it was a gift and already paid for. I guess being relatively healthy and xenophobic ( and a little cheap) make me a real bastard.

A while back it was revealed that our upper management suspended the 1.5 year maximum vacation holding (you could hold 1.5 years worth of your earned vacation). Well it had been suspended for several years to the point where some people were in the thousands of hours of vacation.

Our company is pretty open so it was discussed openly in our company meeting that those with too much vacation would be paid out at 50% down to what their maximum holding should be, then the rule would be reinstated.

Since we have profit share I had to ask "This is going to affect profit share then, right?" Holy shit the room lit up. It's not my fault that these people choose not to take vacation, but they are making it my problem by hurting my profit share.

So now the handbook was re-written that regardless of earned vacation time, you are only paid out 4 weeks max when you leave the company.

People who don't take vacations ARE selfish.

Paid out at 50% of actual value?

I'd be taking a year off, and then finding another job...

Yes. And those people were pissed about it too. I understand both sides, but I was observing the rules not knowing that the vacation rule had been suspended. So I was burning vacation just for the sake of burning vacation. Then by paying these people out I was getting screwed again on my profit share. Again, this is vacation time that they weren't supposed to have anyway.

People like that need to get a life. Seriously. No one they work with will remember them or give a crap about their work product when they're dead.

I know some people that are butting up against the PTO limit, and they have to take time off ever so often to avoid losing it. I don't try to use all of my vacation, but I do take time off... mostly between Christmas and New Year's. Other than that, I usually just take off on Black Friday (mostly for a long holiday) and my birthday.

You'd be surprised at how some of the numbers pan out.

I work for a 500 employee agency. I would say roughly there are 30 exempt employees in the organization.

Our turnover rate is around 35% a year. A thought was that our vacation package was partly to blame for employee retention because we lose so many in the first year or two. So we actually hired a consultant to review the numbers of our offerings versus everyone else.

Long story short, during the presentations it amounted that only around of 60-70% of awarded time was taken...and that was in line with the industry standard.

But we adjusted our accruals because we were "lean" for new employees. This just took place effective 1/1 so how this new vacation policy helps in retaining new hires will take a while to pan out. I'm going to hazard a guess and say no, the folks making $10 an hour give more importance to their base wage.

We also split out traditional vacation plan for hourly employees and implemented PTO for exempt.

I was wondering when this parody was coming.

1/10 though because it took so long.

I kept thought about making this thread. Every time I read the original title, I actually read "vacations" instead and then had to correct myself.

But each time I thought of a parody, I realized, it really was too late. A true parody, but late nonetheless, and I couldn't be responsible for making such an error in parody etiquette.

What's worse is that these people often work this to maintain appearances rather than doing real work. This is a slippery slope and leads a crappy work environment for everyone involved.
