but seeing these people smoke just really makes you scratch your head sometimes.

1. doctors (or anyone in the health industry)- i'm sure they see smoking related deaths on a daily basis.

2. people that go to the gym- it's so counterproductive to what they're trying to achieve.

3. pregnant women- no additional commentary needed

1. I'm sure you're wrong and that neither doctors nor everyone in the health industry sees smoking related deaths on a daily basis.
2. So, if they're going to the gym to lose weight, smoking somehow prevents that?
3. Not touching this one

1. maybe not daily, but regularly. heart disease and cancer are the 2 big ones.

2. so tell me, how does one lose weight? cardio and/or lifting. smoking damages your lungs/heart, which makes you unable to perform as well as could compared to someone with healthy lungs, so yes it inhibits your ability to do so.

everyone i know who stopped smoking gained alot of weight

That's because they started eating to fulfill their cravings, not because smoking somehow magically made them thin.

The worst excuse, though, is when I hear a huge fat person say that. "I don't want to quit because I'll gain weight." Guess what, you're already gigantic, it's not like it could get much worse.

And yes, you should MYOFB.

Why is everyone so damn worried about what others are doing these days? Worried to the point of actually trying to force others to do what they think they should do.

I am in a unique position to hate smoking with a passion. But guess what I will NEVER do? Tell others what they should do. If someone ASKS my opinion, I will tell them what I think of smoking. But you will never catch me shoving that opinion down someone's throat.

And yes, this extends to what they do in front of their kids. It's THEIR kids, not yours.

Someday, when we have whittled away all of our freedoms and completely destroyed any sense of individuality, we will start another war to win them back and wonder why those before us so readily gave these things up.

tell me, where have i not been MYOB?
i have not walked up to any dr., gym goer, mother-to-be. i am merely express my thoughts on an open forum.
i haven't forced my views on anyone.

The freedom to get cancer/other health problems, and to give others the same chance via second hand smoke. Very free indeed.

I'm right and you're wrong, you failed to adequately dismiss my rebuttal of your statements. STFU, GTFO, TPAD, pick one and go with it 😛

I accurately refuted your first two statements. That's the part that makes me right and you wrong.

I accurately refuted your first two statements. That's the part that makes me right and you wrong.

the first one, i won't declare a victory or loss. it's a blanket statement i threw out there, but if you're a doctor working in any major hospital, not some pediatricians office, it's very likely to be true.
and regardless, if you're a doctor in any field, you should be educated enough to know the effects of tobacco smoke on the body.

second one, you're absolutely wrong.
smoking is unhealthy. working out is trying to get healthy.
smoking = bad lungs/heart = counter-productive when working out and exercising.
i can't make this any more clear and i don't see how you could possibly disagree with this one.

Some people don't work out to be healthy. Some people work out to look good. It is entirely possible to lose weight and gain muscle while smoking. Pretty much the only requirement for that is controlling your calorie intake. Throw some biking and lifting on top of that, and it doesn't matter whether you get winded a little quicker than normal.

are you saying that smoking has absolutely no affect on their health and performance?

would you say that there is a negative affect caused by smoking that may affect their workout?

Not really. If you are trying to "get in shape", i.e. cardio, being able to run 5 miles, etc..., then yes, smoking would have a significant effect. If you are simply trying to lose some extra pounds and tone up some muscle (or even build larger amounts of muscle), then smoking really wouldn't have that big of an effect.

Losing weight boils down to one thing... eating less. Exercising can help burn calories a little quicker and can increase your metabolism, but really isnt necessary. To build muscle, it really boils down to one thing... eating more, especially protein. Lifting just turns those extra calories (protein) into muscle. Since lifting is anaerobic, I doubt that getting a little winded from smoking would have much effect on the overall goal of gaining muscle. It might make your workouts a little more strenuous and uncomfortable, but it would still be entirely possible.

Alot of people are at the gym to look good, not be healthy. Alot of those same people are probably the ones who smoke to "look good/cool".

i didn't say it was impossible. i said it was stupid and counter-productive.

you know, it's also entirely possible to smoke your whole life and not get lung cancer.
