I live in the north (MN). I call it soda all my friends call it pop. I asked why and one person said it was because that is the noise it makes when its opened. So now me and a work buddy call it pffsht (kinda a noise rather than a word).
 
It's a coke.

I don't care if it says mountain dew on the bottle. It's still a coke. It's just a moutain dew coke.

South represent!

I think that at least the pop and soda folks can join together in our immutable hatred for the idiots who call it "Coke," regardless of whether or not it is Coke. 7Up is not Coke. Sprite is note Coke. Mountain Dew is not Coke. So why are you calling it Coke? Idiots.
 
Where I come from (TX), all soda/pop is called Coke.

Here (CA), it's soda... wife (from MI) says pop and it drives me nuts.

Soft drink doesn't really work. Any kind of non-alcoholic drink would be a soft drink(e.g. it's not a hard drink), so Kool-Aid is a soft drink under that example.
 
It's doesn't matter. When you are eating out you ask, Coke or Pepsi. Then you can work off what flavor of drink you want after that.

yep... everything is a coke in the South. Example: You say to your buddy, I'm gonna grab a coke from the fridge you want one? Ok.. I've got Sprite, Dr. Pepper, and Coke what do you want?
