people who isn't willing to upgrade to winME?

I personally won't upgrade to WinME.
I had it in my system for about 3 days till it drove me crazy.

First,
It comes with a version of IE 5.5 which would freeze your computer everytime you browse the internet. In order to fix this problem, you would have to go to microsoft.com and download the latest version of IE 5.5. How am I supposed to accomplish this if the computer would freeze everytime I browse the internet?
This is a known issue (which does not necesarilly affect everyone). I heard in a previous thread a lot of people complaining about this.

Second,
it is a stupid OS, just to give an example, windows Media player sucks...

Third,
based on my experience, winME crashes even more often than win98.

I simply won't upgrade to winME.
anyone else in the same situtation?

Yeah I won't upgrade to winME at least until they come out with the first service pack... I have read so many bad comments on it, I am not too eager to try...

Windows 2000 is awesome.
I am not using windows 2000 right now because I don't want to sacrificy some of my games 🙂

the only problem I have with WinME is IE 5.5
I upgraded IE and still have the problems.

I use Win2000 on my other machine 🙂

I was very skeptical myself, about installing WinMe on my system. So I installed it on a seperate hard drive to "test-drive-it." The installation went really smooth. Just to play it safe, I removed all my PCI cards (exept for the ATA-100 controller), then one by one I reinstalled them.

The first day or so, it was acting a little funny when it booted-up, like it was thinking of something (ie. busy). After rebooting the PC about 20 times in 2 days, everything run just fine. It even plays games just fine (so far).

Media Player 7 works OK, but I feel it is a bloated program.

Internet Explorer 5.5 works fine too.

I have a file that use to make a computer crash (or at least attempt to), and when I execute it on 95/98/98se.... it crashes (fatal: BSOD). When I run it on WinMe or Win2000, I get a pop up error box, then after clicking OK it takes me back to the desktop. This is not scientific, but hey 🙂

Bottom line?
People with different hardware can have opposite results. I am sticking with WinMe. It has several little extras that make it worth it for me. I can be on my PC for 6 to 8 hours per day, and I feel confident about my decision.

PS. Late last night I installed Windows 2000 (seperate HD). So far, I really like the way everything can be configured. This is my first time on an NT O/S, but I find it very straight foward! It was clean installed on a NTFS partition. If 90% of the programs I use run when installed.... I am going to go only Windows 2000.

I haven't used it and I probably won't upgrade to WinME...I'm not having any problems with Win98SE and I don't need any! 😀

WinME sucks. It's (more) bloated, it's slower, can't use DOS anymore (though there's a hack), and the beta IE 5.5 and Media Player 7 suck. Oh, and the system restore sucks too, if you don't turn it off, it takes up at least 250 MB on your hard drive.

I have no need for "Me", and I suspect that is true for most people. Therefore I stick with 98 (not even 98SE). I have a stable OS that does everything I want it to do - even internet sharing, with NAT32.

Why do people install "upgrades" like 'Me' without a compelling reason? They (you) are just throwing your hard-earned money at Bill.

Well, WinME is definitely cheaper than Win98 SE a couple of months ago.

I remember that win98 SE used to be like $180 and win98 SE upgrade was like $100 ? I am not sure about the numbers but I think I am close.

I was really surprised when I saw winME for less than $100.

I agree, too bad Microsoft didn't worry about some us.

WinMe is better than win98, if you get it with a new computer or like some for "free", and it does add some rather reasonable features. As for the ie5.5 freezing up, I have never had that happen, but it does have its on little "features" as does all Microsoft 9x os. I just changed from me to 2k and notice a big diffrence, except in speed. Me is overall faster than 2k and 98 IMO.

Right now I'm using Windows 2000 and I would never go back to Windows98 or WinME. If I was using Windows98 I would'nt upgrade to WinME just because it comes with IE5.5 which would crash my computer whenever I used it. Also I HATE what they did to Media Player.

I have not tried WinME (at 98SE still) and will not. Several reasons:

1. My roommate did and it crashed about every 20 minutes, and he went back to win98SE the next day. We've since decided this was due to his crappy Ensoniq64 soundcard that is very driver picky. While I have an SBLive and probably wouldn't have this problem, I'm in no hurry to test my theory.

2. I hate Windows Media Player 7. 6.4 is much more to my liking.

3. I don't like having no native DOS Mode, in a DOS Box windows still has locks on some files and there are things you just can't do with windows running. The list is dwindling..but WinME still runs on top of DOS, there is no good reason to disallow native DOS mode, most people don't use it anyways.

4. System restore. Enough said.

5. My system doesn't get along with Win95, but it gets along nicely with Win98SE, it runs as stable as I expect 9x to run, and it works quite well. I'm happy at 98SE I figure why try my luck? You know the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The main reason I don't upgrade to WinME is not exactly a good reason against the upgrade, but rather a lack of a good reason for the upgrade.

Just in general I don't like the way they remove alot of system level control, it's probably very good for joe-blow user, but it annoys me to no end. I like to have my own control over the system. And there is new bloaty software I don't need/want as well.

But then I intend to leave Win98 behind, I'm moving to Win2k soon, I'm sort of trying to hold out on ATi TV-Wonder drivers...but soon I'll be at 2k anyways, Win98SE will be around for games only. ME is sort of irrelevant to me.

Media Player 6.4 is included with WinME, Just run mplayer2.exe

I haven't had any real problems with IE5.5. I do prefer 5.01SP1 and I only run 5.5 on my WinME install.

While native DOS still has some life left, I am hoping companies will have to innovate a little for the things we typically do in DOS (BIOS updates, partitioning, etc.). Let DOS die so we can get on with out lives.
