People who do this only impedes traffic flow even more

So basically during high traffic some people in the right lane exits off (red arrows), continues straight and merges back into traffic. The flow of the right most lane just gets choked by all these people exiting off and merging back in. Traffic on the lanes to the left move much more smoothly. As bad as traffic already is what's even worst is if some asshat exits off, merges back in and is hell bent on getting back to the left lane and cuts everyone off in the process slowing down those lanes as well.

I don't know if these kind of exits exist across the country but they're everywhere in SoCal. I really see no point in these kind of exits.

I am in NJ.

We have them. Generally they are there when there is a lane which is both an on ramp and an exit only.

People who go to that lane and then merge back in are giant scumbags and the bane of my commuting existence.

I've seen that behavior a bit around here during rush hours. I've been tempted to do it myself, with the main highway running at 15-30 mph while those are clear for 55 or better.

Yeah I've never seen anyone do that either...not in CA either. Only seen it a few times which likely was because they got off on the wrong exit.

When traffic isn't moving, those lanes are generally empty, as they're exit-only or an on-ramp for incoming traffic.

These assholes typically come from the left lane, swerve all the way to the right lane, go as fast as they can all the way to the end, then force their way back in, usually going back to the left lane. It saves them 45 seconds in traffic, I'd say, causing everyone else twice as much of a slow down to keep from hitting them.

There is one of those that is like a mile or 2 long on I66 here in Northern Virginia that you definitely save time doing that depending on the time of day.

On the 405 there's a bunch..by LAX there's one that goes for like 2 miles, and it's right where the freeway backs up. If you dodge in there on a heavy day, it can save you a half hour easily.

Is that illegal. don't you have to follow the traffic laws or are you on a dedicated bike lane?

anyways back to the OP. Why would any one in the right lane allow anyone to merge in. I know I wouldn't.

We have plenty of people around here who will just get into the exit LANE and then come back in further up. It's actually a game for me now, watching for those people a ways behind me get out of the lane, pretend to be exiting, but then try to merge back in near me. I'll go out of my way to keep them from merging.

I've had two experiences where the same dick-head who attempted this happened to be getting off on my exit. The exit is an off ramp up to a 4 way light. There are two lanes, one left turn only, and one right turn/straight (in case you need to get back on again lol). These two different idiots actually tried to take the left turn with me from the right lane. Well, needless to say, I went from the turn lane into the right most lane after getting on the street, and the idiot was totally blown away.

These people are f-ing retarded. I've almost got my ass-hole meter down to a science, now. I can almost 90% of the time tell you just by watching the way someone is driving or acting, whether or not they're going to do something frickin stupid or rude. This is why there wont be any flying cars for a LONNNG time. Not because of the lack of technology, but rather because people cannot even master walking, much less driving, and MUCH MUCH less FLYING.

Yeah, I have principles, but on the freeway in LA, you lose. I used to be against it, but the hell with it. The freeway here is pretty much a free-for-all.

Bike lane. I would filter to the front on roads without a bike lane though.

Yeah, I see it all the time when I get onto I-287 S from 22 E. I get off at the next exit so I remain in the exit lane, but I'm always impeded by idiots who are staying on I-287 and just using the exit lane to get past people.

To the OP - Yeah, it impedes traffic, but it gets THEM where they're going slightly faster. People are selfish, they do what benefits them without regard to anyone else.

I see a similar situation at a jughandle all the time. The jughandle is at a merge point, so people always take the jug handle and then turn right - jughandles are for people making u-turns or turning left, they aren't there to bypass backed up traffic.

To be honest, it's worse in Orlando. People use the exit off-ramp lanes and even more so the on-ramp merging lanes as regular traffic lanes routinely - like it's their right. They get maybe 3 or 4 cars ahead of where they were in the first place, only to cause more of a traffic headache as they try to force their way back in.

Occasionally I've seen people use the shoulder as a traffic lane.

My absolute favorite at the people that use the rest area right before Rt 434 on I-4 west as a traffic bypass... only to get busted at the other side of the rest area by a waiting state trooper.

Another one I see all the time is people getting in the right turn only lane then going straight when the light turns. There is no lane on the other side of the intersection for them, so they have to gun it and ride the shoulder until they can move over.

What amazes me most is that I see this stuff happen all the time on the way to or from work, but once they get to the open road where they can speed up they drive the speed limit! So it's not that they're in a hurry, they just don't like being in lines. It's like in the grocery store, people will spend and hour walking around picking out products, but if they have to wait in line for 3 minutes it's the end of the world.
