I know a few people around AT have been laid off lately. CNN has a story about companies that are hiring, no doubt because of the story they will be getting thousands if not 10's of thousands of applicants, but it is a shot for you guys. 🙂

LOL @ Edwards Jones.

Yeh that's because the last flock of them either committed suicide or quit after the stock market hemoraged over 6,000 points in the last year.

I actually had a guy stop by house earlier this fall when a lot of this started hitting the fan, but not to the point that it has now and flat out told him that I don't envy him in the least bit. Trying to start up as a financial advisor after this year would be BRUTAL. People are seriously scared and concerned about investing in anything short of a CD at their bank.

We're hiring, but we're small time 🙁 We hired two new people in the past week, one of which was a referral from a neighbor that was laid off.

It's a tough economy out there. I have a lot of friends that are out of work, many which are on Visas and will ultimately have to leave the US as a result.

[edit]Perhaps that's a good point. Often the SMBs of the world will be in the best position to higher talented people in an economy like this, because their size leaves them more agile to respond to the current conditions. I'd personally stop knocking on the door of the monoliths and start beating down the door of the SMBs.[/edit]

Notice the number of large hospitals in there.

If you have the skill and stomach for a medical clinician job, you have some great opportunities. You can get a Bachelor's in Nursing in about a year if you have another bachelor's degree. How about a sizable sign-on bonus and $60K+ a year? Respiratory Therapy school is about 2 years with similar income potential, if somewhat less than nursing.

Need money sooner? Take an EMT Basic class at your local comm college. 4 months of two evening classes a week (schedule differs of course) and you can get a $10/hr+ paying job almost anywhere and you can work for multiple agencies, so you can get as many hours as you want. You will be hard pressed to find that at any other hourly job.
With time and more education you can train to be a Paramedic and have a job literally almost anywhere in the U.S., but the pay sucks for the schooling and work you do.

None of these are 'go out and start making money right now' jobs, but they are in high demand with great long-term job outlook; assuming you can stomach the work. As an EMT or Paramedic, you run 80-90% bullshit calls and the rest are you walking into the worst moments of someone's life. As a nurse you can't do anything without orders from a doc, but with some experience you have the opportunity to expand into other areas (with 1 year experience you can go to Nurse Anesthetist school and make six figures).

<--Starts EMT class tonight and might be going to nursing or RT school in the fall.

Quite a few I know went back to school last year for nursing due to the home building market drying up.

You can do it in a year if you have a lot of core biological/chemical sciences. If not the pre-reqs can take a year or more alone to get through.

Let's leave the Super Mario Brothers out of this. They are plumbers, and will always have work to do.

I'm buying stock!

Gonna try for Ernst & Young. I hate how audit firms only hire twice a year.

They hire a lot more than that, but I guess it depends on whether you're going with their giant hiring campaigns or not.

E&Y can be a great door if you can kick it open. It helps immensely to know someone on the inside, because otherwise it's a long road to make progress.

Good luck. I've been working with (not for) E&Y for about 6 years now.

I have 3 IT positions open, but have gotten zero applicants from my post in the unemployment thread.
