How much did you end up buying at first to get setup? I need to buy everything from bathroom stuff, cleaning supplies, and kitchen stuff to appliances.

Some of the bigger stuff I need:
bed
futon/couch
entertainment stand
washer/dryer
microwave
vaccum

It's just a touch overwhelming. It's like I have to spend $1500 before I've even got my first paycheck. :(

Check out craigslist and most of the stuff is free or dirt cheap.
$100 would do up your whole house :)

i haven't moved out on my own but if i were trying to save money on the stuff you listed i'd:

use an air mattress instead of a bed
use above air mattress instead of a couch
put all my a/v components on the floor
use a laundromat
buy a very cheap microwave for around $50
have a dirty apartment or buy a cheap vacuum at a price club(where a friend is a member)

Just wait until lawyer fees hit you...unless of course your renting.

Take your time with the supplies, and your family will probably help you out a bit.

All you need to start with is a plate and a fork. You can get everything else as the money becomes avialable. Remember you have to pay the deposit on the place, too.

When I first was on my own I had a small studio, so I just had a futon and some wooden crates. I went to the laundromat. Then someone gave me a TV. I was so happy to be independent that it was ecstacy to me!

Seriously...best thing to do is figure out what you need as a bare minimum....and move out with that. Then, as the weeks go on and you earn a little...make trips to dollar stores, walmart, etc...to get the things that you really need. Also....check yahoo groups for the freecycle list in your area and use that to get the larger items like a bed, couches, w/d, etc...

I did find a good air bed that I am going to use until I have cash for a real one. That's upstairs in one of the bedrooms, so I need something for a couple people to watch tv on. The tv could go on the floor for the time being I guess.

Laundromat is an option, but it took me forever to find an apartment with washer and dryer hookups in it. It seems like I can get a decent set for $600 from WorstBuy or Sears.

Microwave and vaccum are like $50 each, so they're not a big deal. It's just when you add all the little thins up.

I'm working on it. I've budgeted $8000 for all the stuff I need. Stuff includes dishes, cleaning supplies, tools...

I am renting. I'm new to the area, so I want to get familiar with it and spend a year or two finding the good places to buy a house.

My family doesn't really have any extra furniture. My gramma might have a couple things. :)

You, my friend, need to find a source of milk crates.

And cinder blocks, don't forget cinder blocks.

You really don't need to buy everything at once. Just start with the essentials, and buy stuff you need as you go along.

I thought I had it down to bare minimum.

Something to sleep on, something to sit on downstairs. And stuff for the kitchen and bathroom.

hit up garage sales, and just drive by on trash days, see if you see anything you could use, pick it up and use it.

I'll be able to pay all of the bills, buy everyday things like food and gas, and still have $500-800 left at the end of the month. My gf starts her job in October, and that will basically be a bunch of extra money.

Is it a good ides to take advantage of the 0% programs at Sears or WorstBuy to get most everything we need? It could quickly be paid off in a month or two once my gf is working. I don't know.

I'm going to some large neighborhood ones with my mom. There's a furniture auction on weekends somewhere too. Who knows if they'll have anything, but I can go along.

You can always hang around the university dorms at the end of a semester and go dumpster diving too. There are all kinds of things thrown out that are perfectly fine...

Salvation Army and garage sales.

Steal mattresses and couches from those people who throw them out on the curb.
