People talking on their cell phones at the gym

So, my friend and I were working out at a local gym after school today. We're in the weight room and there's this guy over on those blue mats (you know, where the baby weights and big balls are). He's talking on his cell phone - not exercising or anything. There are also signs all over the club that basically say "don't use your cell phone anywhere but the lobby." Douchebag.

So, is anyone else annoyed to hell by people like this?

I don't really care. I listen to my mp3 player and don't hear them.

They only annoy me when they end up hogging a station or weights because they don't care if their workout takes 3 hours or if they even get a workout.

Ya, it's annoying. The gym is one of the places I do NOT take my phone. In fact that's one of the nice things about it, you can just work out and not have anything else going on or be bothered by a phone.

I don't understand why people get so pissed at others on the phone. Do you and your friend talk at the gym? Is that not just as annoying?

I don't either. I guess some people just don't like the idea of overhearing one-way conversations, or looking at them try to multitask...

And isn't this more an OT thread? lol

Yes, my friend and I talk at the gym, but hearing half of a conversation is very annoying to most people. When you're on the phone, you don't notice things around you as much (people going for weights, etc), and you're just in the way. Plus, like I said, there are signs everywhere saying not to do it - which just makes him look like an ass.

I bugs me too especially in the weight room. To me it just falls under one of those unspoken places where it isn't polite to use your cell phone, like at the dinner table or in a library.

^^^^Good link. I do agree that using cell phones in these places brings a side of low class to the table. But if someone never had any class in the first place then they aren't too concerned about looking the part. Now how do we get the world to see that link?

Is it just me, or do people who talk on the cell phone while in the gym also talk a tad bit more loudly than usual? Our weight room is right next to the gym, but most people who talk on the phone at my gym refuse to take 10 steps and talk on the phone outside.

I don't really see a problem with talking on the phone when checking out. I'm always using plastic and do everything but scan the item myself anyway. Hell, in some places I even scan the item myself. :) This is situational of course. If you know you're going to have to have a conversation with the clerk then definitely hang up.

I definitely agree with the other 9.

I think that it's funny but I try not to focus on other people while I'm lifting.
