There is another side however... what about the people with LCDs that are native 1024x768 that try to run them higher? a lot of times it wont let you, other times, it just looks bad.

no way. i run a 17" lcd at 1280x1024 and that's perfect. i only use 1024x768 when i'm on a 15".
