Hi, I am running WinXP pro. SP1

today, when i was about to access my D:, the said there is an error and need to run "CHKDSK" to fix the error which need me to reboot.

after i finished all the job i needed to be done. i reboot. the blue screen poped up and began to check my D: for error.

i can really remember what the whole paragraph said, but some wordings like "Recovery Orphan file" .... ...

and then back to Windows desktop again. I want to know has it happened to u before? and is it quite normal because of some link is

missing or corrutped and now it is fixed because of chskdsk??

thanks

That can happen when the File Table gets corrupted.
It will happen more often when a drive is highly fragmented.
(when a file is scattered all over a hard drive, or surface error on the HD platter)

Its not unusual and is a built in feature of Microsoft software (corrupting files that is)...

Doubtful that it is a virus.

but people don't defrag that often.

my friend just don't defrag at all, at least since he got his.

ok... i try to defrag some times.

is PerfectDisk any good?

I use Executive Software's Diskeeper, but that's only needed if you want fancy features like background defrag (it will defrag nightly in the background so you don't have to worry about it). For those who aren't as much defragging freaks as myself, the built-in Windows Defragmenter works just fine. There is no need to use extra costly software.

After you finish your defrag (recommend you do it in safe mode, much quicker) put your XP CD in your machine, go to start, RUN, and type cmd then hit enter. then type in the command box "sfc /scannow" (without quotes and space in between sfc and forward slash). That will replace all the corrupt system files with the originals.

Sorry, this answer is simply not true. This is not 'normal' behaviour and is definately unusual. Faye, are you shutting your system down properly (e.g. not just hitting the power?), have you had any problems with the machine crashing or freezing that might have been the root cause of the file system corruption.

DaTT, may i ask why to do so? i really don't know

It will just make sure that none of your system files are corrupt, which can cause your computer do to very strange things and can get very annoying. It definitely won't hurt anything to try it and it only takes about 15 minutes. It has fixed my computer on several occaisions.

hmm,,, now another thing...

i use Perfectdisk to do an "Offline Defrag"

when it is analysing about 50%, suddenly error message popup:

STOP: C0000135 UNKNWON HARD ERROR
UNKNOWN HARD ERROR

and it forced me to do reset.

I always shutdown(i don't hit the power off button, not even putting it on, cuz i don't turn off my computer).
I always let it running overnite. At night, it just do nothing.
cuz i heard that doing too much defrag will wear out the harddrive and people just don't do defrag at all.

the error message really scares me!!
I don't want my harddrive to die. i have so many stuffs in. take too many cd to back them all up.
