People obsessed with Japanese culture

Doesn't bother me as long as I'm not around them.

We have this Japanese transfer student that told us that her friend's roomate annoys the living hell out of said friend because she does obsess over Japan.

I watch anime, and am interested with Japanese culture (just as I am with all cultures), but I would never dress up as a character or anything.

Interest != Obsession.

Japanese culture is awesome. Not anime and such (although I suppose that stuff cannot be separated from the rest) but things like martial arts and bushido. I used to do some martial arts myself - the level of mental and physical focus one can achieve with these systems is amazing.

I think it would suck to be a racist.

Maybe if I visit Japan I could find something to obsess about. But I don't care much for Japanese culture.

costume play is more of a global culture nowadays. but them white folks with weird unmatched looks really make baby jesus cry.

So explain this japanese culture thing to me?

If its about incorporating random japanese words in written or spoken launguage, its pretty shallow and laughable. People who are serious about learning the japanese launguage (or any foreign language, for that matter) would be ashamed to strut their lack of mastery when they know they still got a long way to go in their study.

I do play japanese games way more often than american games, but not limited to. games are games, my money goes to whoever that can make more entertaining stuff. It just so happens american characters, their background and such arent as appealing to me as the japanese counterparts. Same goes for manga and anime, while I enjoy some of their stuff a lot, I do realize it is still a "subculture" in Japan as well.

If this "japanese culture" thing refers to typical stereotypes of Japanese folks being polite, superficial, gossipy and obsessive, I am neither attracted to nor appalled by them. Stereotypes arent exactly accurate or trustworthy anyway. It all depends on indivuduals after all.

So my main point is if you somehow gotten an idea japanese subculture == japanese culture, I strongly oppose to that view, although I see nothing wrong with being fond of a certain form of entertainment AT ALL.

What do you think of these people? If I was Japanese I would be pissed at all these clowns obsessing over my culture.

You know what strikes me funny about that, is most people in urban areas of Japan like Tokyo are obsessed with Western/U.S. culture.

Mostly HipHop culture, but a lot of countries around the world seem to be as well.

maybe

ROFL. I hope that guy on the subway got his ass kicked.

And its not so unusual for one culture to obsess about another culture. For some of you it may seem absurd because of the obvious racial differences between US and asians, but its fairly common. The grass is always greener....

Who the fvck cares? If people want to obsess over a culture, who cares. God i swear ATOT is like highschool sometimes with all the people going on about what's so "cool" and "uncool". If it makes them happy, more power to them.

QFT , except that Anime and the excessive animation they have on there TV s makes me feel like throwing up 😉

How is being obssesed in star trek or watching american idol any better? I never understood this crazy obsession in cars people over here tend to have. Preferring one form of entertainment automatically turns you into a socially inept geek? Sometimes I feel we all generalize too much about things we dont know enough about, or dont care to learn about.

Thanks for your input on my endeavor in linux, I may need more help down the road. On a side note, I would assume "nerds" are masters at linux every way you look at them; I got a handful of friends around me who watch anime on a regular basis and dont even know what GRUB and LILO are (I just learned those a few days ago myself) 😀

Modern Chinese culture is all about acedemics and dedication. Not much of a culture IMO.
That said, I'm Chinese myself.

That's a pretty stereotypical way of looking at Chinese life. How long have you lived in China?

why are you obsessed with people who are obsessed with japanese culture?

there are many things i like because they are different than our normal culture. you can only get so much of britney spears, backstreet boys, reality tv, etc before you want to vomit on anything that slightly resembles it.

Who said you need to live in China to know about chinese culture? So what seperates a stereotype from a culture? Who the hell denies that chinese culture in general doesn't include a focus on academics and dedication?
