I agree that the OP sounds like a jerk. It's called customer service. Everyone who has ever done customer service will agree that people are idiots. If you can't deal with that, maybe you should look for a different job. Also, what's the deal with the thread title? Like people in other countries don't ask for directions from toll booth workers?

When you are a toll collector, you have lost too much of your humanity to be allowed to rant about the general populous.

He probably get pay $5 an hour....pissed off that he has to give direction.

0/10

Here why you should shut your trap:

1. Not everyone from NJ and know the turnpike well.
2. People get lost, or took the wrong exit so things did not go as planned.
3. If you hate your job, you should get another one and stop ranting.
4. I don't believe there anywhere in your job description said that you shouldn't help lost drivers.

That is the dumb a$$ed turnpike that I sat in a 9 mile backup because they only had 2 booths open at the southern end? And they couldn't be bothered to warn of the backup on the worthless electronic signs they have? Sorry no sympathy from me.

I bet your post is interesting. Could you give me a call and read it to me? 😛

I do have to agree that a lot of people can't read a map. They can't overcome the feeling that when heading south they appear to be moving backwards according to the map.

It's not our fault people from other states drive like retarded blind men. You try fitting so many people into such a small place, and oh yeah, most of the towns are 200 years old.

Now I understand why the lines at toll booths get so long... who stops to ask directions when they have a line of people behind them? That's just rude. At least pull through and go into the building.

Toll booth collectors need to be handed everything.

I use a major highway in New Jersey. Called, the New Jersey Turnpike. I'm a toll payer.

I may be lost, blocking traffic, and causing lots of headaches for everyone. All I need is directions from someone who is already right there and knows the area. These toll booth collectors can't do a freaking thing but collect money. They stand there as if they know nothing. Haven't they ever heard of being nice? Can't they "speak"? It's not that hard. Everything has to be simple to these toll booth people. They can't think for themselves. How can you not say "turn right at the next exit"? How do they not understand how useful that can be? Stupid ass toll booth collectors. Why are you in my toll booth dirt bag?

You are just a freaking toll collector. Your job is to take money and to help your customers get to their destination. That's it.

Then they get freakin attitudes when you ask a simple question. Give you mean looks and say, I can't believe you don't know where Brooklyn is. "Well, no duh, you meatbag, you only live and work here all day long. I'm not the retard who doesn't understand that customer support is part of his job."

What's worse is that these toll collectors are allowed to thrive with big salaries for a simple job that they aren't willing to do.

Topic Title: American's need to be handed everything.

i'm american. i'm going to hand you your apostrophe from your spelling of "american's" as it is not needed in that sentence.

Giving directions is not part of a toll collector's job, nor should it be. His job title is toll collector, not toll collector and direction giver. Do you want to be behind the guy that asks for directions to Brooklyn?

Yes it is part of their job. If someone is in front of you, backing up the whole line of people, do you want the toll booth operator to argue or pout about having to do more than collect money? No, instead you want them to they say "turn in about 3 exits", then get the driver out of there as fast as possible. The line flows again. If the toll collector don't answer, then the line is blocked as the irritated driver stays there and argues. Their job is to get the line going as fast as possible. If that involves answering a simple question, then answer it. That is their job.

Spoken like a true union shop steward...

NJ Turnpike toll collectors are raging asshats - you guys can't even take the tolls properly without being retards. I don't know why people bother trying to ask more of you.
Yes, they are. I've met some pretty assholic people that just don't bother don't care. But I'm not like it. I don't yell, or nothing, I just do my job the way it's supposed to be done. And I even give out directions. I've never yelled at anyone for that, but it doesn't mean I don't get angry.

I can't stand unreasonably stupid people. If I had my way, they'd all be shot.

"whaaa people keep asking me for directions, whaaa!!!"

Sorry, never been in a union. 🙂 To be honest, I don't care if VIAN has to do more than his job requires (sorry VIAN), I'm just looking at it from my own selfish perspective. I don't want to be behind the guy that's getting directions (although I have EZPass, so that's a moot point now). A toll collector's job IS very customer-service oriented, but the way to give good customer service is to get the people through the tolls as fast as possible, not make a line of people wait so you can give someone directions. It's rarely as easy as just "take the third exit." Like I said, at least pull through the booth and pull over on the other side and go inside the building and ask directions.

Then the answer is "I'm sorry, I don't know". It shouldn't take any longer than it takes to hand them their change. If they have to answer a question to get the line moving, then answer it. Don't hold up the line by withholding info.

Or, maybe put simple maps in the toll booth. Hand it to the customer if they are truely lost, and get them on their way. 2 cents a page isn't that expensive.
