I love Valve more and more. If only Steam wasn't an astronomically massive vortex of suck.
you're using it wrong
Steam is godsent
Steam works well for internet based MP games, but is a pain for single player games when you don't have a reliable internet connection. Impulse is a much better digital distribution system in those cases (since you don't need to have an internet connection to play any game). Offline mode is a joke, in that you can't set it when you actually need it (when your internet connection goes down), you can only set it while connected. I hope that gets fixed at some point, or hopefully already has since I haven't been paying attention to Steam for a while.
You can set offline mode in two ways. When you start Steam and your pc is connected to a router or cable modem, Steam will think there is an active internet connection and will try connecting for a while. Eventually it will ask you if you want to do offline mode. The other method is if you unplug your network cable from your pc, or just disable your network connection, Steam will instantly ask you if you want to play in offline mode.
The hate on Steam is a joke. It's the best thing to happen to PC gaming in years. I'm almost to the point where I would refuse to buy a game that isn't on Steam.
gag
Faith is non thinking, isn't it?
Steam is DRM
I like Steam and I have reasons for it. It's not faith. DRM aside(None of the security features of Steam have bothered me at all), Steam is to PCs as Xbox Live is to Xbox 360. There are many conveniences offered by Steam that are very useful to me.
*I can talk to friends via the Steam messenger while playing a full screen game. There is also chat room and voice chat features as well. These features are entirely game agnostic.
*I can see what games all of my buddies are playing, and even join the exact game server they are playing on with a click.
*I can access my library of games from any pc no matter where I am.
*I never have to worry about aging discs or losing CD keys. My game library is permanent.
*The Steam store is incredibly easy to use and very helpful for finding good games or cheap games(or both). Purchasing them is very quick and easy as well and it downloads directly onto my PC.
*All of my games get patched automatically.
*There's a sense of community. User pages, groups, achievements. It's all very fun.
