People lie to me. Everything is all right they say. But if I believe them, then I will be called a bad listener. So I have to look for little clues, little signals that reveal the truth. Perhaps the words wilt a little, or the eyes tighten. maybe they don?t trust me. maybe they lie because they are afraid I won?t sympathise, won?t be empathetic or caring. or maybe, caring means that I search for the signals. Maybe caring means that I don?t blindly accept the words spoken to me without their definition which is provided by so many other things. Body language, intonation, speed, rhythm, timing.

but where are the signals here, online? where is the wilting of words, the lowering of the eyes or the soft exhalation of breath? They are hidden behind a wall that I cannot reach.

So, instead of empathising, I flame you. Instead of catching the lilt of your words, I overreact to your joke and call you a whore or some nasty thing.

However, I do believe that there are signals here. I do think that we communicate with many layers, even when using just text. But its easy to see this as just text. Nothing more.

goodnight and happy flaming.

2) hang around ATOT long enough, and you'll get to know some folks that post a lot, including a little about their personalities (at least their online ones) and realize that 99.8% of us (0.02% of the ATOT population are mods :p) are full of bullsh!t.

If one is always ready to find fault or criticise or shove another's faults/weeknesses into their faces, then those people will not want to talk to you or reveal anything to you. Not a good way to live, but if that's the path you have chosen to walk, you walk it alone.
Sometimes if we grow up hearing nothing but criticism, that's what we do too. The hard part is to stop the automatic reaction and tendancy to do it.
Why would anyone extend their hand to a dog that they know will bite them?
