People in the IT department

I just got an email from my boss tonight telling me she wanted to meet with me regarding our we process our help request. I assume someone isn't happy with how we're handling our helpdesk requests. What kills me is people never want to listen. I kindly asked everyone to use a helpdesk system I put together to better manage requests for supplies and to fix certain things. If I'm working on something thats critical, ppl think I should drop what I'm doing to go help them set their margins to 1" instead of 1.5" It's so annoying but I understand it's part of the job.

The helpdesk system keeps track of users' request and with ppl calling and emailing me throughout the day, I lose track of everything. It's funny how people dont bother reading my emails and they b!tch and moan about certain things. Like, last week I emailed everyone on a thursdya night to tell them I had plans of shutting down the network for a few hours over the weekend to do some maintenance work. I come in Monday to hear a few ppl b!tched that they couldnt get on to do certain things. Now, I could've sworn I warned everyone before hand but yet they want to make me look like the bad guy.

Grrr ... i need a new field.

The IT guy stole our Linksys wireless router and we haven't heard back from him in the past 2 months. I'm gonna file a police report tomorrow.

Very few work places care who we are, what we do, or how we do it...but damnit we just better make sure it's f@#$%@ing working or it's our ass!

you need to work for a bigger company with actual stated processes and managers with backbone.

In response to the question posed by the title, yes, you do get a break if you do your job correctly the first time 😛

Go ahead, I'm sure there was a policy in place that prohibited it's use. Furthermore, you exposed the entire network to a number of vulnerabilities and risks that you could likely be sued for yourself.

All of that is assuming of course that this is a corporation or some kind and there are policies in place against your wireless router. Our policy is, once it's attached to our network, it's our equipment.

I atually get more hassle from the people in the IT dept. than the people I support. I can honestly say that I love my job (well, for the most part) and the people I support. Either I've gotten really lucky and I have great users or I'm somehow doing something right (it's a slim chance but hey anything is possible). I had 2 ladies bake me brownies 'cause they were so happy that I was able to help them out (the first actually bought me a dozen cookies before she baked the brownies....my users rule 😀 )

but we get hired right back when the computers go offline, and they realise what the IT guys actually do 🙂

Be prepared to be handed a process for server resets. I'm willing to bet you'll need to give at least a 72 hours notice each time and will need to notify the managers first, and let them inform all of their employees just so they can look like they are a part of the power loop. Welcome to corporate America

Yep. Your great when you fix their problem and a scumbag when you don't. I just never understand when they blame the pc because they forgot their password, lol.

I've come to the conclusion that we are monkeys. everyone seems to point fingers at us regardless of the computers working properly or not. Meeting is monday morning so I'll post an update. in the meantime, i'm updating the helpdesk to get that rolling.

funny, cuz this afternoon i sent out a memo explaining our backup system, as many folks had to ask why it takes long to backup ALL 12 servers. i then get a response "will the gradebook system be available sunday?" hmmmmm, i couldve sworn i stated in my email that sunday is backup free.

WTF? Why'd you respond like that? He said the it guy stole "their" router. So probably means the company considering he didn't say "my" router. Of course, I'm suprised they waited 2 months, assuming this is some consultant type IT guy that isn't there every day.

Well they can come where I work and they can wait there while all 500+ get through backing up, lol.
We don't get a break, but in the end it is all good 🙂 I like it and am glad I made the career change.

Damn, just a router? If you're gonna steal from your campany and disappear, at least make it worthwhile.

RE: OP

yes. we do get breaks. I finished clearing a backlog of tickets that had been nagging me for months and spent the day neffing as thanks to myself 🙂
