Why do Braves fans not support their team? Come on... 40,000 fans opening night, which is 10,000 less then capacity. Then two days of almost record setting lows of 19,000 and some change. Being in the bay area but a huge braves fan, the only time I can watch them is when they play the Giants, which sadly is only one series a year at Pac Bell, and I try to go to each game if I can. Why does Atlanta not support their team? The freakin Hawks probably average close to what the Braves do, and the Hawks certainly haven't won their division 11 straight years. Maybe it'd do the franchise good to lose 100 games this year, because the fans don't deserve anything more.

The team changes from year to year. What's to support? A name?

Edit: They also made the mistake of naming it Turner Field instead of "The Hank Tank" or "Aaron Field." It's expensive too.

You obviously don't keep up with baseball if you think the Braves have sucked over the last decade. This year might be a different story however.

edit- NM, I see you said you don't keep up with baseball. :)

I went to a Hawks game and only 10% of the fans supported the home team... I think it is an ATL thang :p

If dominating your division year after year for more then a decade defines "suck", then I guess the Braves do suck. I just don't understand how a team that has nothing going for them, like the cubs, rockies, padres, mets, orioles, etc. can outdraw a team that's playing in a major market with a large fan base.

As for team's changing year after year... do you follow sports at all? I'm guessing you don't. You support the team because they're "your team", regardless of what changes.

As briefly as I can put it:

The Braves sucked for a long time. I mean REALLY sucked. Ted used to do the most outrageous stuff to get people to come to games. Then, in the early 90's, they made some good trades, brought up some good minor-league talent, and stopped sucking. People suddenly got REALLY excited about the Braves. The fans were fanatical all the way up to the World Series win in '95. After that, the Braves kept winning the division and such, but would fall apart in the post season. Compounding this is the schizophrenic ownership, management, and such. Basically, they're always in the hunt, but never win the race AND there's no age-old legacy and mythology to anchor the fan base (a la the Yankees the other old franchises).

That's how I see it anyway.

It's because everyone in Atlanta (for the most part) is a fairweather fan. If the braves can turn it around and actually play baseball, the stadium would be full again.

Hey Fausto1, I can remember those good old days when I was in middle school and the Braves were so desperate to get people into the stands that as long as you got all B's or better, they gave you something like 6 free tickets to any number of games... The only way any of us went was when a team came that we wanted to see, like the Cubs (back when they had Dawson, Grace, etc). And those seats were the nosebleed seats, but you didn't even go there, just straight behind home plate, and you had your pick of any seat in the house!!!

If I liked the Braves at all, I would go for sure, but I'm a BoSox fan, so I make it to the park whenever they are in town, and even then I'm not happy about it! I think another main reason I personally don't go more is what GTaudiophile said, they name the stadium after that punk Turner. I have never liked him, and when they named the stadium Turner Field instead of Aaron field or something I said I would NEVER go to a game. So I figure even getting me in the park at all is a pretty big thing! He was right about it being expensive too, we're talking Disney expensive!!!
