Me and a friend are going to the U2 concert in may, and we dont really want to have to drive there and pay for parking and everything. Is there an easier way to get there besides just taking a cab? Is there a specific train that will get us there?

In the old days, before the construction of the United Center, there was virtually no parking. Sometimes you had to park in a lot far away and walk through one of the roughest neighborhoods of the city.

No, there is not a specific train that will get you there. The Madison Ave. bus runs E/W and will drop you off in front of the building.

It's hard to give you any more info, seeing as you give us no clue as to where you'll be coming from.

well, from the south suburbs. Like, we can catch a train downtown, and make it into the loop, but where do we go from there?

From the Loop, take the Green Line west. When you can see the UC out your south window, get off and catch the bus. I believe the GL stops at Damen which the UC is on, but somebody correct me if I'm mistaken.

In fact the Green Line doesn't stop at Damen, so get off before it at Ashland and take the #9 bus south to Madison and walk a block west, or take the Blue Line west (the one toward Forest Park, not 54th and Cermak) and get off at Damen/Paulina and walk a block north on Damen.

CTA Trip Planner

Enter your home address in the "starting point" area. Next, select the United Center from the drop down list in the "destination" area. It should give you the best route to use, along with a few alternatives.

And if my memory is correct, there is not a stop on the Green Line at Damen. The closest stop would be Ashland or California (4 blocks either way). The Blue line is just as close to the United Center as the Green Line, but there is an exit at Damen (street just West of UC). If you use the Blue Line, make sure you get on the Forest Park Branch, not the Cermak/54th St. Branch.

You're about 8 minutes late ;) And California (2800 W) is eight blocks west of Damen (2000 W), whereas Ashland (1600 W) is only four). The Blue Line is one block closer to the UC (one block south vs. two blocks north).

I noticed that right after I posted.

In my opinion, why bother with the CTA if you're coming from the burbs. By the time the concert is over, do you really want to hassle with taking public transportation at that time of the night just to save $10-$15. Split the cost of parking 4 ways and pay the $3-$4 each. The cost of the CTA will even out with the cost of gas.

Yeah, but traffic in the immediate area won't be much better either. I'd say drive to a good, safe parking spot and take a bus from there, or something like that.

Jesus walked everywhere he went. Don't you want to be a good little christian and do the same?

Jesus was also murdered at the age of 33, but I'm not looking for that either Although walking around certian areas by the UC alone at night might accomplish the same thing.

Once you get to the loop, why not just take the Madison bus west? It goes right there.

/edit: maybe not for the way back, you'd need to walk about 10 blocks into the loop to get back to the train. The madison bus only goes into the loop during rush hour, otherwise it goes east only as far as halsted, which is west of the loop.

yeah, like im only worried about that neighborhood after the concert is over (11 PM), im not sure how rough it can get. Like, we can take the metra to get into the loop no problem, then how much might a cab be getting to the UC from the loop? Or would just taking the madison west bus there work? How late will those run, and will we get back in time to catch that late metra train back south (the IC)

its not really that, its mainly that my parents dont want me driving downtown to the UC (im 17), which i understand, and am not totally confident in getting myself and my friend there safely, unless i practiced it or something)
