Pentium4 looks HOT in BIOS...

p4 1.6"A" with retail box HSF, artic silver II
256mb ddr
EPoX 4SDA+ (SiS645) latest bios
two WD400bb raid0
winXP pro
antec 400w with smart temperature control (does not have 4pin PSU connector > not required on MB)

My Questions:

in my (latest)BIOS, the cpu temp flunctuates between 40-50 degrees C idle!!! (it refreshes the temp every second)... is this normal??? I have plenty of case cooling, my case temp stays at nice 29C. how hot does a 1.6"A"ghz P4 get at normal voltage with the retail intel HSF at sitting idle??? could it be my BIOS reporting incorrectly???

i got this board and cpu so i could overclock the he|| out of it (300A comes to mind) and the 4sda+ from reviews looked very promising considering i could convert from my 1ghz 266fsb Athlon setup without new PSU and ram. BUT i dont want to fry my new p4 if it is running that hot 🙁

ALSO, is there an easy, yet good motherboard temp monitor once i install windows?? (besides motherboard monitor 5, i dont understand it at all)

thank you very much for any help.

how much of that AS2 did you apply? a thin layer should suffice, also are you sure the heatsink is attached correctly, making good contact, clipped in tightly etc? the fan is plugged in right?

dang that's hot ...
my pentium 4 2.0GHz A chip runs at 28 degrees celcius typical ... you can download another program that reads the CPU and fan speeds through windows ....

i believe its called SpeedFan .. and you can find it through www.download.com

beware, however, using this program wrong can possibly be fatal to your CPU .. because it has the capability to completely turn off your fans...

50 degrees celcius is on the edge of being unsuitable for running the chip ... according to intel's site .. the P4 runs optimally under 51 degrees celcius...

isn't it almost impossible to fry p4 northwood cores?
dont' they come with a thermal protection?

so if they get too hot, it underclocks itself till the temp drops?

i think that's what intel means when it says that it runs optimally at under 51.

no?
