My CPU
is a P4 3.0 800, 1 gig mem, 9800 ati AIW Vid, 2x WD 37gig raptors, 2x 120 gig WD 7200 HD, Intel 875 MB, SB Audigy2 platnuim S/C and 19" Sony Tube Monitor

play all high end games but have to set my card down to low settings. I like the GT or GTX 7xxx series cards for video but my MOBO doesnt have PCI.

Should I get an all new rig and give my CP to daughter. If so, this is the million dollar question? AMD OR PENTIUM I want the best but have always been partial to AMD because years back I had an AMD/K-5 with compatability issues with most hardware and they said then AMD was the cheapest and kinda like having a VW over the BMW-pentium.

I want this CP to last a while and want the best parts available, also can I build this for as much as it would cost getting a store or company built machine

thanks

Get the Asus A8N-SLI-PREMIUM, or the 32X version. A dual core X2 AMD would blow anything from Intel out of the water. AMD is also cheaper because there's more people buying their CPU's.

Welcome to the forums !

AMD K-5 crap days are over. Right now Intel has nothing worth buying except the Pentium-M for laptops. A single core would be great for games, but you sais "and more" plus the future of gaming may require dual-core for speed. So probably the best would be dual-core X2, 3800+, OC ir, and use the motherboard above ^^. 2 gig ram (2x1 gig sticks) You could keep your HD's and audigy for this box.

Alternatively, you could keep your processor, drives and sound card and just buy a new motherboard and a 7800GT(X). This would be quite a bit cheaper, but if you want much better performance than go with mark's suggestion.

Your current CPU is fast enough, you are just limited by your video card. Assuming you have a socket 478 since it's an 875 chipset, there are only 1 or 2 motherboards with PCIe that have socket 478, but they arn't very good, so I would go ahead and build a new rig. AMD is much better now, there dual cores can't be beat by anything Intel has. I have a Pentium-D, an X2, a P4 and a Pentium-M, and the X2 is definatly the best of the bunch, faster at everything, and AMD has the advantage at gaming to begin with. My pentium-d is horrible, runs at 70c even with a 103cfm at stocks speeds and idles at 50c, while my X2 overclocked to 2.618ghz with the stock AMD cooler runs at 51c under full heavy load.

Thanks to every one, you all are very helpful. My main intent is hardcore gaming, then evrything else, I was just leary on going AMD because I've always been pro-INTEL. I think I'll go AMD 4400 or 4800 x2,

I play, BF2, H/L 2, AND GETTING CALL OF DUTY2,
ALSO
I'm looking at the SAMSUANG SAMSUNG LN-R328W Black/Silver 32" FOR PC/GAMING/DVD, my current monitor is the SONY 19" CRT, any help on this, thanks

again, you all are great, thnkz

I was the same way, I've had every generation of P4, willitamtte, 400mhz FSB - 800mhz FSB northwoods, and then presoctt. Presoctts were running way to hot for my tastes, so I figured for dual core I would give AMD a try, and couldn't be happier that I did. While my $160 pentium-d was nice a cheap, it runs way too hot, and it's way slower than my X2 in everything. My X2 has been 100% stable, my pentium-d system on the other hand has been nothing but trouble.

Excellent choice, either one of those processors should have really long useful life, since games and other software will be gradually moving to optimize for dual core next year. And these are also excellent candidates for OC. You may also want to look at the Opteron 175, which will use the same motherboard as the X2, but will OC like there's no tomorrow.

For your monitor needs, you may want to consider getting something like Dell 2001FPT or 2005FPW, and run dual monitor setup with your CRT.
