Pentium or Amd? pls help

I'm a gamer! What cpu should i buy?
Amd is cheaper! Many people says that pentium is better. But can i,a human,feel the differences between a pentium and a amd in gaming?
 
p4 2.4c about $160-$170 shipped from newegg.com / Abit IS7-E $99 shipped from newegg. You can get a good heatsink/fan and overclock a 2.4c to at least about 3.0ghz. People are getting as high as 3.4ghz on air cooling, sometimes higher. All you need is some decent 3200 ddr ram, maybe kingston hyper x, or corsair, hell, im using geil 3500 ultra platinum, im running my 2.6c @ 3.11ghz. Geil is a lot cheaper then most ram, and performs good for the price, if your on a budget, the best bang for your buck right now is a p4 2.4c system. TRUST ME. Hell, trust all of us p4 users, look at the forums, most of us are gamers with p4's! INTEL!!!

ha, while it's true the pentium is faster and will make for a faster computer CPU wise, it is also A LOT more expensive. if you're on a budget and you're a gamer, go AMD so you can have a very good CPU and have enough money to spend on a 9800 NP
 
hrmm, well, also keep this in mind. if your gonna buy a computer at all, dont you want sometihng thats going to run the new games coming in about 2-3 months, like half life 2? if it wasnt for my interest in new games, i wouldn buy a intel system, id go AMD. but i wanted something cheap, but powerful as well..... go intel! 😀
 
An AMD Barton processor will be able to handle the newer games. I was able to play the Doom 3 alpha demo with about 15fps on my 1.4GHz THUNDERBIRD processor and Radeon 9500 Pro. Just imagine what you could do with the extra $$ that you save when going AMD. With that extra dough you can buy a Radeon 9700/9800 Pro or non-pro.
 
if you're on a budget, go with the amd system

if money isn't a issue, go with an intel setup


both will do just fine with a nice video card...

i think a 9800 or a fx5900 are both a little overkill for right now...

but if you got the money, then hey... why not? 🙂

man, my ti4200 feels like it's old technology now!!!
 
lol you shouldn't be complaining. I just sold my radeon 9500 pro and now I have to use a gf4 mx440...overclocks to some insanly high numbers, but still....mx440.

AMD = better price/performance ratio. Also, you can buy a cheaper chip now, and then put a more powerful chip in a few months down the road, at much lower cost.

Intel = better at video encoding, and a faster actual clock speed. Much more expensive.

For example: I have a $42 processor running at 2ghz that outperforms a 2.4ghz Intel processor in games.

BUT if you don't care about money then a P4 3.0c would fit your needs 🙂

are you saying amd based systems will not be able to play upcoming games?

I don't think the price-to-performance ratio is in AMDs favor anymore. This is sad, as I have been using AMD chips since the K6-2s for this reason. I recently researched, priced, and built my latest rig, and I had to go intel. The P4 2.4c's (800mhz FSB) will beat the pants off anything AMD has right now in the same price range (~$160 USD).
You can go cheaper than that and still have a good computer, for today's games. But your rig will be quickly dated.

i have a $90 barton 2500+ running at 3200+ speeds. cheaper than 160 and is faster than a 2.4C, and i dont think my rig will be dated anytime soon..

Ha freakin ha. I can buy a decent OEM Athlon XP AND ECS modo and add a hsf for less than $100. Try to do that with Intel, you have to go with a Celeron chip.

Nuff said.

 
yes,but someone told me that if i want a computer for gaming ,i should choose amd.Because it's cheaper and if a have a good mobo,ram,vga, there are no differences btw amd and pentium. He also told me that pentium is more for multitasking etc,stuff that i don't need.
I really do not know what to say.There are both amd and pentium fanboys.
 
If you got money to blow, go Intel.
If you want to save money, go AMD.
Both will work fine for now, and for the future. What else needs to be said? 🙂

I don't know what to choose! I have money but if it isn't much difference btw those 2 combinations in gaming (i dont know.you tell me) ,why to pay double for the first? please help me choose!
 
You hit the nail on the head - why pay more for the first? It's even possible that the 2800+ will be faster than the P4 2.4. I'm guessing you can find plenty of things to do with the money you save.

good point... but let me ask you this... how many people run a 2.4C at stock speed???

i sure don't... and i'm pretty sure that my 2.4C @ 3.2 ghz is faster than you 2500+ at 3200+ speed

for that matter.. i'm sure my 3.5 ghz P4 is faster than most AMD systems tbred or barton... overclocked that is...

i have a 1700+ @ 2.5 ghz and my 3.5 ghz P4 is much faster


and p4 systems aren't that much more expensive...

get a 2.4C for around 170 (about 80 more expensive than a 2500+)
get a Abit IS7-E for around 99 (about 20 more expensive than an epox 8rda+)

minus you don't need to buy a nice heatsink/fan because the stocks ones will do just fine for P4 systems overclocked...

so you save about let's say 20 bucks on a cheap hs/f

in the end... you spend about 80-100 more for a P4 system that will run plenty fast compared to an AMD system...

are you gonna overclock? if so, the intel system will prolly go to 3.0+ Ghz w/ 1000 mhz FSB which will be a lot stronger than the 2800+ (even if you OC the 2800+ to 3200+ or more, it is hard to make up for that FSB difference)
 
Well If I had money I would for sure buy Intel. But right now I would only get a 1700+ ($50?), 8rda+ ($80?), 512mb pc3200 ($110?), and an slk800 ($20?). That adds up to $260. Now I'm fifteen years old, so I get maybe less than $500 a year to spend on everything I want to buy (computer maybe $200-300 a year max). So it totally depends on your budget. I would buy a P4 if I actually made money.

I don't think you can see any difference right now with the current games, not like our eyes can keep track with how many FPS a game is going,

only when it lags we know something is wrong....
