Pentium M vs P4 vs Athlon 64

A new test at ExtremeTech compares the performance of the desktop kings with a notebook CPU. The Pentium M was mounted in a new A-Open Desktop uATX MB. Unfortunately, they didn't test the power each uses.

I can't wait unitil desktop bnoards begin to surface for the Dothan Pentium M's on the new 915 platform. 925 may not have been that great for the p4, but the move from DDR333 should work wonders for the Pentium M, especially considering the overclocking headroom that many have reported on the pentium M. The fact that the CPU remains competitive at ddr333 is a testiment to how great the processor truly is. If i was building an gaming system in the near future i'd probably go for a desktop pentium M; Intel need to realize this and release higher clocked, un-power-gated desktop parts. Call them the Pentium G for gaming.

Why would you go with a Pentium M, just so you can have an Intel processor that doesn't have the same problems the Pentium 4 has? Sure it performs well... but there are other, better options. It would be nice though if Intel would use the Pentium M design in all their desktop processors. There are times when it's best to stick to your guns, and there are times when it's best to admit your idea wasn't the greatest, and abandon the Netburst architecture in favor of a better one.

Ya hopefully Intel actually gets a clue and dumps the p4 architecture and follow the way of Dothan.

i've got a mini-itx p-m 1.6 dothan system i use at work that i built, it was not cheap to build but its fast and puts off very little heat


these cpus are very fast!

ibase mb 890 motherboard
dothan p-m 1.6ghz <---- lost a bid on ebay for a 5W 1.4ghz dothan chip so i settled with a 1.6ghz chip
512mb pc3200 (runs at 2100)
seagate momentous 40gb hd
dvd/cdrw laptop drive

the computer is only 4"X4"X8"!!!
and looks slick with a black 17" lcd

i will say that suse runs very fast on this setup, substantailly faster than winxp, but i have a feeling the ram has to do with that cause it uses shared memory for video (intel extreme grfx), 1gb stick would probably make it faster in winxp, but it definately runs faster than my ageing xp2ghz system

I can see the Pentium M being very useful in the all-in-one Monitor/PC systems.

My laptop's P-M will clock from 1.7 up to 2.125 using just the FSB (100 -> 125) with no locks. At that point, the ram is at 208 MHz and things are a good bit zippier

Also that Step Into Liquid 1080x... video will run flawlessly when OCd, but at stock, it gets like 5 FPS.

I'm guessing the extra bandwidth does a lot of good.
