Pentium M processor for notebooks

If battery life is not a consideration is there any advantage to getting a notebook with a pentium M processor. Wouldn't a Pentiu m 1.7ghz be signifigantly slower then another noteboox with a 3ghz processor.

The multiplier on the Pentium M is 1.33 when figuring out how fast it will be compard to a P4. So as 1.7 Ghz would be a 2.26 in P4 land. I used to think the multiplier was somewhere around 1.6 but after testing I found it was more like 1.33.

Go to the SFF/Notebooks forum and find my post on this topic. I have done the benchmarking, where else would I come up w/ 1.33?

BTW it's actually closer to 1.3

no because 1.6 pairs with 2.4. If you do a proportion (may not be the correct method) 1.7 comes to 2.55 (maybe 2.6 ghz it pairs with)

Where are you coming up with that muliplier? A 1.7 equals roughly 2.21 in respect to a P4.

If you look at the initial AT Centrino roundup the PM 1.6 is faster than a desktop P4 2.4. Link So I would say that the 1.7 should be even faster.

Yes but that testing is for the whole system, and the multiplier is only good as a reference for those laptops specifically. My attempt is relevent to the CPU.

Anyone have an idea when someone is going to release a desktop board for the Centreno?
I found some blade and isb's but no true desktops.

not going to happen anytime soon, there is a petition online somewhere for that but there was a mini atx board taht costs like 4c of 5c.

It is true that if you don't care so much for battery life, but care about top performance, getting a notebook with AMD's new mobile version of their Athlon 64 bit microprocessor would be a much better choice.
