I just got an hpz3000 with a pm at 1.6ghz, when running on battery it is showing a clock speed of anywhere from 221mhz to 598mhz, and when plugged in it is showing 595 (regardless of power settings), this is from systemproperties in xp, havent tried with saundra yet. Are those speeds correct, as they seem awfully low (especially when plugged in) or is xp reporting the wrong numbers (maybe missing a ghz)?

Try running a cpu intensive program and then check system properties while the program is running.

actually windows is probably reporting it accurately....it's clock throttling that's happening

if u want your pentium m to run at it's fastest setting at all times, then u must adjust the power settings to always on or desktop. if it's on laptop it'll enable clock throttling, but it's quite good at it...when u run something demand it bumps it - at least it does on mine...i know because sometimes i hear the fan kick in for a couple seconds.

i'm running a centrino notebook - pentium m 1.4ghz and windows xp home. u can check my rig.

yeah my 1.7 does the same thing...i think its xp reporting it incorrectly. because when i run a benchmark or something...its getting the same cpu performance as when windows does report it correctly!

why?

if u want it to run at full speed then just use the HOME/OFFICE DESK or ALWAYS ON power schemes.

all that program does is give u a little more control of speedstep, but if all u want is to make sure the cpu is at full speed, then u don't need it.

Well I have an Inspiron 8500, with a P4 M chip.

In my machine, putting the Always on power scheme doesnt make the processor run at its full speed ... i.e 2400 mhz

With the power scheme as "Always on" i tried 3Dmark, got bad scores. Installed SpeedswitchXP and it works fine.

Moreover.. the program is free and i find it extremely convienient....

actualy even on always on desktop it still is running at 598mhz, speedstep seems fine for when its not plugged in, just dont see a reason why it should be clock throttling constantly when it is plugged in and therefore there is no penalty for running at full.
