Has anyone run the Linux kernal 2.4.17 on a P4? If you have, have you noticed any significant change in performance? It has been a while since this was enabled and I don't recall seeing any benchmarks. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Oh, yes, I already did a seach and I didn't find anything.

What distro's support the 2.4.17 kernel? I have Mandrake 8.1 and MIGHT give it a try if it does. The non probuction 2.2 gig, 512k L2 cache cpu I have should be pretty quick at it and I'd love to see the hyperthreading in action.

I'm runing Mandrake 8.1 and I have recompiled the kernal using version 2.4.17. It is running great. In fact that is the system I am posting from.

You can get the kernal source at the following URL.

http://www.kernel.org/

Let me know if you need any help compiling the kernal. I'm not an expert but I might be able to help. Who knows, this might be enough motivation for me to move to a P4 processor.

Thanks

P.S. Just as a note for those who are interested, the kernal 2.4.17 compiles fine using the new version of gcc-3.0.2

http://www.kernel.org/ eh?

I'll check that out, not becuase I have a P4, but becuase I never downloaded a new kernel b4, only re-compiled an existing one.. even then it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted (I somehow lost my modem! doh!).
