Such a vast array of knowledge here please indulge a newbie for a moment. I belong to several forums and generally read most of the posts concerning motherboards for knowledge if nothing more.
I am planning to build a system in the next 2 months and will either build a 1Ghz PIII using an Intel D815EEAA or a 1.2 Ghz T-bird using an MSI K7T-Pro2A mobo. I will put them in a JFH modded Genie. I will not overclock either system I build, and will use a good HSF.

Can I expect the same stability and reliability from the T-bird as the PIII.

Thanks in advance I'm in your debt...!

Sure... why not? Part of Anandtech runs on 4 1.x GHz T-birds... ;)

You'll also notice that the T-bird's price is ALOT cheaper for the same or better performance than the Intel's proc. Only thing that has sortof jerked the AMD's around are the chipsets that were available, but newer ones are on the way...

Checkout what Anandtech runs on here.

Mugsy:

Since I am in the same boat as you do, I decided not to create another thread for the same subject. Hope you won't mind!! :)

I was deciding between Pentium III 1G w/ Asus CUL2 board and Athlon 1.2G w/ Asus ?? board. I like the performance and price of Athlon but worry about their compatiblity issue with AGP, bus drivers and hardware like the old days. I encountered a lot of problem when I owe AMD K6-233. Due to this reason, I stick with Intel for years.

Does AMD still have same problem in these days? I know they still have 4 in 1 driver available. What the about AGP, memory and power supply issue? Where I can find the compatibility list for that?

I am a AMD newbie here. Any recommendation and suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

** EDIT **
Forgot to mention!! With speed like this, I am not going to OC this time. Which board do you recommend for Athlon? Also confuse with FSB 200MHz speed. Can I still use my PC133 memory for Athlon?

I know it's a lot of questions. Like I said, I am newbie to AMD. Sorry!! :)

Forget your past AMD memories. These chips are much, much better now. The chips AMD in making now, both Duron and T-bird, are stable, fast, NOT overpriced, and they overclock very well. The T-bird 1.2ghz is a powerfull chip, and you will have money left over for that nice video card, monitor, etc. you always wanted.

As for the motherboard there is a wide selection. They all work very nicely. I like the Abit boards.

From my experience,
I'd say sure go for amd cpu + no matter what chipset mb for home use,
sure go for intel cpu + intel chipset mb for office use.

You'd be better off going with the 1.2ghz Tbird+mobo combo. The 1.2ghz Tbird costs about the same price as the 1ghz P3(after these latest price cuts). If I was building a new system I'd definately go with AMD. I'm currently using a P3 700@1ghz and that's good enough for me, for now anyways.:)

I've always used Intel, but if building up a new system, I'd go AMD. The prices are great and as posted earlier, the chipsets are looking alot better.

Yeah definately! AMD are playing with the big boys now. If anyone is worrying about AGP video card compatibility issues, the VIA 4-in-1 drivers should clear them up. Heck, I have an ATI Radeon 64 DDR Engineering Sample board which runs perfectly fine on my MSI K7T Pro 2-a. Go AMD!!

My Splendid Rig:

MSI K7T Pro 2-A Motherboard
AMD Duron 800 @ 900 w/ Chrome Orb Cooler
256 mb Micron / Hyundai PC-133 SDRAM
ATI Radeon 64MB DDR (7072 drivers)
SB Live Value
Quantum 10GB HD ATA/33
32x Panasonic CD-ROM
DLink PCI Ethernet Card
Acer 17' 77e Monitor
Altec Lansing 45.1 Speakers
WinME

there's an AGP issue with the KT133 chipset and windows2000 ... just make sure to get the reg.patch from AMD's homepage and everything should be fine

I held off for a long time, took the plunge three weeks ago, and running a T-bird 1.0GHz at 1.2GHz, a Creative TNT2 Ultra, SBLive, HSDRAM, and alot more (6 things hooked up to USB). Sure is one sweet little system! Just make sure you get an AMD approved PS (as listed on their site). And I'm only using a Cooler Master DP5-6H51.
