Pentium III 600 vs Celeron 850

Hello all,

Forgive me if this is a newbie question, cos I am : )
This is my PC spec :

Aopen motherboard
Pentium III 600 Mhz
128 MB RAM
20 GB HD
Sound card: Diamond Monster MX400
Video card: Matrox Millenium G400
Afreey 10x DVD ROM drive
17" monitor
Altec Lansing ACS 45.1
OS: Windows 2000 Professional
Cable connection

Recently my PC was broken (I brought it to a computer shop), it turned out
that the motherboard, CPU, and power supply is not working.
Everything else is OK. Cos I'm on very tight budget and for the time being
I just want to fix it.

I planned to replace the motherboard with Gigabyte and the CPU with
Celeron 850. My question is: is replacing my current CPU with Cel 850
will improve the overall performance? Or should I go with higher speed
Celerons?

I use my computer mainly for: programming, email & internet, & sometimes
watching DVD.
My other question: if I replace my current CPU now w/ Cel 850 will it slow
down its performance when playing DVD (I use PowerDVD) and when
browsing websites with streaming video and flash content?

Thank you : )

Ronald

ps: I also would appreciate if you know any websites for performance comparison
between Pentium III with higher speed Celerons.

Why C850? How about a C1000 or C1100? Most BX mobos will support them just fine even though they usually document a 700 - 850 max.

C850 will improve performance compared to the PIII 600 (~10% I would guess)

Anyway, I agree with oldfart...why no cheap C1000/1100?

Celeron 850 is faster than PIII 600, but I'd get a 1.2 GHz Celeron with the appropriate mobo. (You have to get a new mobo anyway.) Nice boost, plus it'd be easier to sell than a sub-GHz machine in the future.

AnandTech is a good site for PIII vs Celemine comparisons.

Well if your going to replace the motherboard did you ever consider a 1 gig duron and an ECS k7s5a? Both can be had at newegg for around $110. You can even use your current ram and it allows for an upgrade to ddr ram.
