I have been waiting for the slot 1 Pentium III 1GHz 100MHz FSB to appear and then for it to come down to my price range. It is approaching my pucker point, but something I saw in a post over at Overclockers.com makes me hesitate about buying one. I always buy the retail chips just for the peace of mind the 3 year warranty gives. The post I saw said that the box that individual had received his chip in said that it must be used in an "Intel Server Board L440GX+ and Intel Server chassis or SCServer chassis" or else the warranty would be null and void. Since I would be using the chip in my ABIT BE6 II Ver.2 MB there is no point in buying the retail version of the chip to get the warranty if the warranty is void. Have any of you purchased the Pentium III 1GHz 100MHz FSB, and if so does the box you got it in have the warranty notice I quoted? I have called a couple of prospective suppliers for the chip and of course they know nothing at all and just say it is a retail chip with a 3 year warranty. Dealing with sales reps is like trying to carry on a conversation with an answering machine.
Thanks for your help.

While I can't answer the specific question, I do have two questions:

1) How often do Intel CPU's really go bad? (Unless they've been abused, which voids the warranty by itself.)
2) How the $*#$! are they going to tell what board you ran the CPU in?

Just my $0.02.

[EDIT]I assume you've seen this?[/EDIT]

I have never had a CPU -- Intel, AMD or Cyrix (in the old days) -- fail, which is not to say CPUs never fail. One of the reasons -- besides the peace of mind I mentioned -- for buying retail is that it also insures me against getting a CPU that was tested and rejected by someone highgrading for a good overclocker. I don't own an Intel Server Board L440GX+ and since that is apparently the only board the CPU warranty is good for, it is reasonable to assume that if I did need to have the CPU replaced under warranty Intel would ask for the board serial number which I would be unable to supply. Ipso facto -- no warranty.

PS
I just had another conversation with an answering machine -- in this case a support person at Intel's Tech Support(?). He couldn't, or wouldn't, answer my crisp question of whether the retail boxed Pentium III 1GHz 100MHz FSB carried a disclaimer saying the warranty was void if the chip was used in any thing other than an Intel Server Board L440GX+. All he would say was that if it did say that, then the warranty would be void if I installed it in my BE6 II motherboard. Guess I won't be getting my new Pentium after all.

Very true, which is why I found Intel's warranty statement on-line. That's the only warranty statement I could see, no mention of a different warranty for P3 1 gig.

Also, out of curiosity, where are you finding 1000e processors that are retail? I thought the only ones available were OEM.

Many places have the retail slot 1 1Ghz 100Mhz Pentium III listed: Augustus Technology, Dallas Memory, Go Go City, Access Micro, Techsumer for starters. I have the warranty you found in hard copy in my files from the other retail Intel CPUs I have bought -- the problem is that the one report on Overclockers.com says that on the box the disclaimer to the warranty I quoted appears. No B&M store I have access to has this CPU so there is no way I can confirm for myself whether it is on the box or not, and as I said, a call to Intel couldn't get a simple yes or no answer to the question either. Under the circumstances I won't order the retail CPU.
