Pentium II 350Mhz - Slot Processor

I have an old pc that I let the kids use...it's a PII 350Mhz slot processor with 256MB RAM. The CPU has a huge heatsink stuck on the side of it with a little tiny fan. Yesterday, the fan died (finally) after groaning on for a few days. Rather than try to replace it, I was hoping this processor could run without it. The most taxing thing run on this machine is Scrabble II. Other than that, its just internet.

Will this CPU burn to death if I don't replace the fan? I've been checking the BIOS temp readings and so far the warmest it's gotten is 39C, but not sure how accurate that is.
 
test how hot it gets under load with it in normal position (i mean with case side on, and crammed anywhere it would be sitting for operation)

then check your temps

if its a HUGE heatsink then i would say its ok, but if its small, like about as big as the side of the processor itself, then i would get a new HS/F.
 
bah, it should be fine. my p3 800MHz ran for 5 years, then i found out it never even had a fan! and that was with more then scrabble and internet.
 
Well, it's been running a day so far without a hitch. I'll keep an eye on the temps, but it seems OK. Thanks
 
My P2 50 does not require active cooling and has been running fine for quite some time. I'm sure yours will do just fine.
 
i remember that i had a p2 333 with a small fan about as big as the side of the slot CPU.

i unplugged the fan, and just looked at hardware monitor in BIOS. this is with no load of course, and boy did it burn up, but never crashed. YMMV with the size and design of the HS, though i wouldnt worry too much about it

Most cpus of that era should be fine without a fan, if you use a heatsink of this era. Personally I'd probably not use the Retail heatsink without a fan, if I needed the cpu to last a longtime.
