pentium D or core 2 duo e2160?

Junior Member
Ok, the boss (girlfriend) says I can blow around a whole $100 on the CPU. replacing a P4 2.26/533 I am finding the pentium D930 (3GHz) and The core 2 duo e2160 for around $110. I know either is going to be a great improvement, and the new arcitechture in the core 2 duo makes freq not so much an issue now, but then again, 3GHz and 2Mbx2Mb L2 vs 1.8 1MBL2? Is it that good? I mostly play HL2, Quake 4, UT04 (HIS Radeon X1950 512MB). That kind of stuff. Will also be running 2GB DDR2 667. I am leaning toward the D925/930. A bit cheaper and maybe the 3GHz will make it up? What do ya'll think? Thanks.

Definitely go with the e2160, core 2's have way better clock per clock performance than the pentium d's. Also, you could probably OC that e2160 to 3ghz to get a really killer upgrade.

wow, I think I agree. Just found a convincing review. OC'd the core 2 over 3GHz, solid. Even without OC it still looks ALOT better. Wonder if I can talk her in letting me spend $125 for thr e4400 (2Mb L2)

* You realize that the Pentium D930 and the Pentium Dual-Core E2160 are socket 775 processors, right?
* Your $110 E2160 plan gets you a CPU, MB and DDR2 for that price?

That would have been the point at which she slipped him the tongue during one of their make-out sessions.

"Definitely go with the e2160"
"2160 at clubit.com for 76 bucks!! jump on that!"
"Another vote for the 2160."

He's upgrading from a socket 478 P4 2.26. His budget is maybe $125...
Does the OP even own a socket 775 MB?

I thought the same thing because I have an old 2.4/533 and I was like "wait that's not 775"

OK, Don has not been paying attention to CPUs since the socket 478 P4 2.26/533: I think it is pretty clear why he is paying attention to the GF.

While Don was mambo-ing, the socket 775 P4s came and went--

So, like Rip van Winkle, he is looking at a changed landscape now.

Don, you will need more than a hundred bucks to upgrade, since you will certainly need a new motherboard and some DDR2 RAM along with that new CPU.

While you were "sleeping", CPUs and RAM became an incredible bargain. Motherboards have gone sort of sideways, but, at least their prices have stayed relatively stable.

Recommend:

CPU 2XXX as per other posters here Call it 80-90$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...2c3028%3a20275&bop=And

Memory: 2 x 1GB 1.8 v DDR2: $50.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...5527%2CN82E16820134117

Yes, a GB of good quality fast memory is now twenty five dollars.

Mobo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...5059%2CN82E16813130128

Or, see if you can find an Abit IP35-E. Call it $90.

$90 CPU >>>>> $74 CPU
$90 Mobo >>>>> $80 Mobo
$50 DDR2 >>>>> $42 Mem (553 DDR2)

$230 or so..... $196 if you go lowest end....

So, you need to wheedle at least another $100 out of the old Ball & Chain.

OP: Get the core2. Netburst is dead for a good reason.

Jeez Mr. Pickins, are you his girlfriend?

Hmm, OP asked about upgrading his circa 1999 socket 478 CPU.

Newegg does have a 3.0Ghz socket 478 still for sale, but, with the 800FSB, I am not sure it will work in his mobo....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...tyCodeValue=517%3A7443

He asked about a Pentium D or Core 2: socket 775 only.

So, in terms of reading comprehension:

OP: Get the core2.

Looks like everyone agrees on that, it's just that he is going to need a new mobo, memory, and, as someone pointed out, a new video card too, since he is probably running an ATI Rage! 8MB PCI card right now....

But, he has a girlfriend, so he does not care. And that's a good thing.

I'm sure his GF isn't limiting his spending on each individual component.
She just set a total he could spend, and he didn't know any better than to post it as "I can blow around a whole $100 on the CPU".
Sounds like he's thinking a CPU upgrade is as simple as buying the CPU and nothing else.

donlightbody,
Please post more information about your thinking on an upgrade, so we can move on with our lives. 😛

don't forget a nice cheap PCI-e graphics card as well. he probably either has integrated or AGP, so you can probably find one at newegg for $80 for a decent one that is slightly capable or the lowest end for around $30.

What are the odds that he's currently running a P4b with DDR2?

It still sounds to me like his GF set a budget which he broke down into per component prices.

😉

Dear Mr. P,

Did you even read the op?

I stand corrected.....you are correct.....I got distracted by the GF aspect of the post.

HIS Radeon X1950 512MB.... That kind of stuff. Will also be running 2GB DDR2 667.

So, he has video card, and 2 GB of DDR2 667....I think; maybe he has not bought that yet either.

Don: Please post more information about your thinking on an upgrade, so we can move on with our lives.

If you are looking for socket 775 Core 2 CPU ~= $100:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...6036%2CN82E16819116052

Overclocking these is apparently scandalously easy....see other threads.

So, Mr. P: I apologize, you were correct, having actually read and interpreted the OP.

Mr. Don: to quote Dr. Evil: need the info, throw us a bone here, so we can get on with our lives.

Total budget?
What you need to get (OK, how about your PSU? Case?)
What you are going to cycle from old PC?
Pic of GF.?!

Thank you.

QFT

Replace girlfriend and get a Q6600 or E6750...

That's a significant upgrade - especially factoring in overclocking headroom.

However, you have to take into consideration the significant impact said upgrade would have on the OPs sex life... From my perspective, a cost benefit analysis indicates it's best to just get the cheapo C2D and be done with it 😉
