Pentium D 805 -- SpeedFan says "Remote" 66c idle, 89c transcode?

Hi all,

I recently bought and set up the 805/D101GGCL combo from Microcenter and installed SpeedFan & Clockgen to see what I get out of it. Things seem to be running fine, but the temperatures seem much too high for my liking.

BIOS states that the CPU idles in the mid-60's during boot. Using SpeedFan, the CPU is recognized as being idle in the low to mid-30's, but has a "remote" reading registering in the mid-60's.

When OC'ing to 3.6-3.7Ghz with the stock HSF/fan, idle temperatures remain relatively similar. However, when transcoding a video I see the CPU temp in SpeedFan jump to the high 30's, while the "remote" sensor nears the 90's.

Everything else in SpeedFan remains below 40c, actually. For the life of me, I can't figure out what this "remote" reading is corresponding to and how to address it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds to me like your speedfan reading is completely full of it. I just installed it and it has two of the temps on my system at 128 celcius. I would believe the BIOS, but if you really want to figure out if the 30 or 60 idle is the correct temperature though, touch the Heatsink and if your hand gets burnt it's the 60.

You could try installing Mother Board Monitor to see what temperatures that program gives you.

Actualy if his idle temps are high, the heatsink probably isn't making good contact, in which case, the heatsink would be cool to the touch rather than hot..

Speedfan seems to be having issues reading the temps, and also sounds like you have a cheapo motherboard, which might not be reporting temps correctly either, but 60c is too hot for idle, so something isn't right, make sure the heatsink is seated fully and correctly, if it's not, the you will have high temps, and start throttling or even shutting down.

FWIW, I'm using an entry-level Intel motherboard (D101GGC). Just installed MBM 5, but seeing that it hasn't been updated since '04 the board I'm using isn't listed. Using a random Intel board on the list, I come up with case and CPU temps of -1c.

Anyone know of an accurate program for temperature readouts? I'll go double-check the heatsink in the meantime.

I usualy use Everest, but they no longer have a free version. I'm not sure what it's called, but I believe Intel has a temp montioring program for their motherboards as well.

Interestingly, Everest seems to match SpeedFan's readings. Intel Active Monitor isn't supported by my board, while the newer Desktop Utilities package that replaced it states that the "SM Bus could not be installed," forcing it to abort installation.

Edit: Not that this is as important as getting the temperatures down right now, but running PhotoWorxx at 3.6Ghz (granted with a few programs running---Foobar2K/Firefox/GTalk/GAIM/uTorrent, if that's important) gives a score of 5597, below the 2.8Ghz P4, Celeron D 326, and Sempron 2600+. Possible bottlenecks are the fact that I'm running integrated and using PC3200 (2x1GB)... but that still seems rather low. Lower than the Barton that this 805 is replacing.

Based on evrything you have said, I think the temps are correct, and it throttling. Get a good HSF. And on my speedfan 4.26, temp2 is the CPU.

Yeah, sounds like you are throttling, the temps are probably accurate..
